So what? They will be forced to compete again?
Considering the distance between them and their nearest brick and mortar competitor I'm surprised that DOJ hasn't targeted them as a virtual monopoly. Only Amazon gives them a run for teir money and they tend to use China about as much as Walmart does.

Buy American.... Sure you'll pay a little bit more upfront but you won't have to buy that item again 6 months from now. Additionally when you spend your money locally it benefits your local economy in ways that you may not see immediately.

Now I'm not telling you that I don't go to Walmart.... They've become pretty good with their grocery section. But when it comes to durable goods like appliances or tools even their best offering pales in comparison to a genuinely American manufactured product. Something that's getting harder and harder to find these days.

You say you're worried about global warming? Every time you purchase a good manufactured in China you're tossing another 25 lb of CO2 up a smokestack. Not that global warming matters
That much. Just saying...

If costs go up, prices go up. Econ 101.

If costs go up for Wal Mart, they go up for all.

Does this stuff really need explained?

No....not if you source on continent.
Walmart has dedicated shipping supply lines isolated from on continent supply chains.

Now if you're talking supply and demand...
Ok....maybe you're right. However it is still better to spend locally...and quality is always an issue.

It's not going to be more expensive to do that?

No, what do we see happen? Manufacturers simply move from China to Vietnam.

So we are going to put tariffs on every item made off shore?

Cool.

I don't shop there.

You're focused on expense. China has you right by the wallet! Paying less at Walmrt is a down payment on a weaker American manufacturing base....ergo weaker revenues....ergo more inflation and more dependency.

I don't to like it either but I'm not going to lie to myself. Prices can go up in more than one way.
You can change the number on the sticker or you can devalue the currency. The latter is the boiling frog process.

It isn't likely to change. Walmart is well established, very savvy and very convenient. I use their grocery delivery a lot! Locally they employ about a thousand people. So the issue is indeed complex.

Oddly I never argued otherwise but since you can't address my actual arguments you have to make some up for me.

The issue is fairly straight forward but the ramifications can be many.

Address your arguments? Sure I did...
If you think prices are safe without tariffs you're wrong. They do go up...even if the price sticker doesn't change. They go up by becoming a greater percentage of your disposable income.

We are an uncurious society...as long as the shiny object stays in front of our faces we look no further.

Again, I never argued that.

I addressed the argument about Wal Mart having to compete if their prices go up by noting the prices will go up for all.

What causes inflation? Watch, Trump will be begging the Fed to do the very thing that causes inflation.

Like demanding that interest rates get dropped to zero percent like he did last time?

Unfortunately due to a convenience factor people will endure the ptce increases and still not buy locally. Now if the tariffs are used properly ( fat chance) they would subsidize local suppliers....creating enough of a price differential to make a difference. Don't hold your breath though.

Ultimately people would have to be educated to the fact that making a purchase almost directly from the Chinese supplier is very damaging to the economy here. Then after you get them to know that you have to get them to give a shit.

ON the one hand prices will be higher.

On the other hand shifting production back to the US or even just out of China is a worthy goal. It may turned out Nixon's opening of China may have been the end of the US.

A prudent strategy would decouple trade with China via tariffs while offering substantial incentives for building in the US. Thats historically what you did.

Buy what? The majority of items sold at retail are no longer made locally.

These manufacturers do not exist to subsidize but all the same you are arguing for taxpayers to pick up the cost of manufacturing for private businesses.

How is it better to buy from Vietnam?

Disagree ...

I have no problem finding furniture made right here in America. Within 20 miles of my house there are private artisan businesses that make everything I need the furniture. probably within 20 miles of your house too. Yes it costs more.

I have no problems finding appliances that are at least 80% manufactured on continent. Amana used to be 100% but I don't think they are anymore.

As you move out into smaller items It gets a bit trickier but you can find American owned businesses that source from American owned suppliers.

Can you cut China out with altogether? Probably not and it's not necessary.

It all depends on how determined you are to be part of the process.

You can find random things. I live near Amish Country and there is all kinds of furniture there. Unfortunately it is only affordable to a few.

I'm doubting this.

People don't have the time to research for days and then travel hours.
