A man has died in a crash which closed both sides of the main road link between Scotland and England.

Emergency services were called out to reports of a single-vehicle accident which shut the A74(M) and M6 motorways at about 06:40.

Cumbria Police said the accident involved an HGV and the driver - a man in his 60s - was pronounced dead at the scene, close to junction 45 northbound for Gretna.

-------

I had set off to work at 6am, so I missed the crash by a few minutes. I set off back home about 4pm, but went via the suppliers for materials for tomorrow. Every road was gridlocked, got home 7:30pm.

The lorry apparently crashed into the bridge, shedding it's load over all 6 lanes, damaging a few cars. Poor guy lost his life.

God Rest his soul.

I had the experience of just missing a fatal crash by a few minutes. I now pray for the person who died every time I drive by that spot.

Agreed, it's not fun dealing with the traffic when this happens.

I have used that road quite a few times over the years, wonder if the HGV driver had a medical incident?

Probably never get to find out. He's hit the central bridge support North bound, the only damage I can see is the flattened central metal barrier.

So either medical or fell asleep. He was 60 years old.

Or was on his phone, texting.

Sad, i have driven all over the UK on a previous job, some of the stuff i saw was really horrific, i have lost count of how many accidents i saw with people smashing into the back of other vehicles they don't look far ahead on motorways.

Don't know if that was the case with this one, that is criminal with people who do that, i have seen it all while driving, my phone was never used while driving if my company needed to contact me i waited until i could pull over safely then talk on the phone, one time i was driving to Dover and hit a tail back everything came to a halt, as i looked at a truck out of my window the guy was watching a movie on his laptop on the truck dash, i remember he was from Romania i made a point of checking his license plate, crazy.
