Mamdani: Let NYC Eat (Socialist) Cake

Am I the only one who doesn't give one fig if NYC loses its mind and elects Mamdani?

LET THEM. He wants to tax millionaires to pay for "free" childcare, buses and housing? GOOD. Let them figure what revenue is left after millionaires leave the city in droves. They want socialism? LET THEM HAVE IT. No one deserves it more than NYC.

I mean here is the mentality of his supporters: $250K student debt at 32 years old, and he's ready to "give it a shot". Great work, Dillon, you deserve all the socialism that's about to get shoved down your throat.

For Dillon Robertson, 32, money is a constant worry. He commutes to college in Connecticut and will graduate with close to $250,000 in student loans. He's supporting Mamdani and says many of his cost-saving proposals could make his life easier, but at the same time, he worries if it's all possible.

"A lot of the stuff he says sounds nice. But I both wonder, can he do it? Can he pull it off?" he said. "Or [is] it just kind of like a Band-Aid on a leaky ship?"

Still, he admits, if the options are to keep plodding along or try something new, he's ready to give it a shot.
When all the rich people leave Mamdani will do what all socialist really want to do, hammer the shit out of the middle class with insane tax burdens and then blame it all on capitalism. Class warfare.

This is going to be awesome! NYC will collapse very, very quickly.

True dat.

How does money run out? It circulates by nature

LOL, if it just circulates, then why does the government have to keep sending more money every month? Why is the federal government currently shutdown - can't they just use the "circulating" money? :-)

Venezuela has huge oil reserves, but Socialism made its people poor. Similar in Argentina before Milei.

In NYC, they will use the dollar as part of the US, so they won't see hyperinflation like socialist Zimbabwe did...

$100 trillion would buy you three eggs. Then a few days later, one egg.

In NYC, the people wanting free stuff now outnumbers the people who make the money and would prefer lower taxes. So they are basically going to confiscate money from the wealthy, and the wealthy will move. More people and illegals might come to NYC for some free stuff. You can see how quickly you run out of money.

Then again, Mamdani might just be blowing smoke. He might not have a clue how to implement his ideas.

In a free market economy, where money is exchanged for goods or services, your point has more merit than in one where the government distributes money/goods/services to people who do not earn it.

Not if the productive people paying taxes leave the city. The money dries up, and you’re still stuck with welfare people with their hands out.

How can Democrats not understand this?!
Again, you are making an assumption that they will leave the city. Those proposing the tax increase don’t agree with your assumptions

Evidently Musk endorsed Cuomo. Musk must hate Cuomo.
Any rational person SHOULD hate Cuomo. He's a turd in a suit: a creepy sexual harasser and a proven liar.
But Mamdani is ever worse; a radical Communist Islamist. The worse combination on Earth.

I dont care, I say elect him. Im curious to see how much of the things he said he will do will ever come to fruition.

You don’t understand what circulation means do ya?

Money doesn’t ‘circulate by nature’—it circulates because people create value, invest, and take risks. When high taxes or overregulation drive out those who generate and invest capital, circulation slows. If producers, investors, and taxpayers leave, you’re left with bills, not circulation.

Ya know, many would say that the number show that the 1950s was the most prosperous decade in American history. Wanna take a guess at what the top marginal tax rate was???

I’ll save you the spin…. It was 91%

How do your theories hold up to the numbers and history

If if if. All I’ve heard on this thread so far are assumptions that people will leave. It’s fine to have that opinion but it’s not fact and your ideological opposition assumes otherwise. So how about we talk more about facts and less about assumptions

Some people will leave, some people won't.

But the one thing which is certain is that if you tax something excessively, you'll get less of it.

Simple Econ 101.

When I was a kid, cigarette taxes were a lot less than they are today, maybe 4 cents a package.

Raising the taxes to $4 or more has really reduced the number of cigarettes manufactured and sold, people used to smoke everywhere but not nowadays.

Similarly speaking, if you tax income excessively, people won't make the effort to earn.

You'll see a reduction in earning, just like we've already seen a reduction of smoking.

What is driving the right wing crazy about Mamdani is the possibility that he may make a very good mayor for New York. Were that to happen, the repercussions, considering the flap yap by the "Conservatives", would all look very humorous in hindsight. Will that happen? I don't know, but he could hardly do worse than our present felonious President.

I appreciate the effort to make an argument but if you think reduction of smoking was because of taxation then you’re not running on all cylinders. There was a multi decade effort to educate the public about the harms of smoking and promotions of healthy living. Also regulations banning smoking in public spaces.

You’re not even close to comparing apples to apples.

Want to try again?

A ton quit because cigs cost too damn much.

You are just grasping at socialism straws

No you are not my Sweet Sue. Not only don't I give a rat's ass, I will almost be disappointed in democrats there if they DON'T elect the guy. I mean, why not? What the hell, he is only out to run the biggest, most important city in the world.

He wants to tax millionaires to pay for "free" childcare, buses and housing? GOOD.
He should tax those millionaires of ALL of their millions! I mean, what do they need those millions for?

He's supporting Mamdani and says many of his cost-saving proposals could make his life easier, but at the same time, he worries if it's all possible.
Fantastic. I can't wait to see the look on his face when he finds out that it WASN'T possible. :laughing0301:

Being an ex-democrat from decades ago and an independent for much of my life, somewhere down deep inside it pains me to see the democrat party turn insane with no way out. But, I agree, we live in a democracy and if certain areas of the country want to vote to destroy themselves then we should probably just let them.

Let them, and then not bail them out.

Enjoy your socialism, losers
