If you were the father, I believe, you'd teached her not to fight with big boys (especially in the front of the class). I mean, avoiding this situation might be a better solution. Putting the boy in jail, wouldn't return you your daughter.

I would teach my daughter how to defend herself. I'm not saying she would win every single encounter, but her odds of becoming a victim decreases with knowledge. Boy or girl, you don't lay your hands on anyone unless you are attacked and I will stand by that every time. She has every right to protect herself as she sees fit and I would never discourage any of the women in my family from standing up.

It gets a little dicey if she slapped the boy first. Still no way to justify punching her. Perhaps slapping her hands away or restraining her is acceptable. But if he initiated all contact, you gotta throw the hammer down. Me? I wouldn't have responded had the girl slapped first. When I was 18, a girl threw a brick at me and hurt my arm. I didn't do anything about it. My friends were saying I should have, but no. I was three times bigger than her.
