Merkel Says Obama Had 'Significant' Role in Working Out Opel Deal

German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters in Berlin that she spoke with Obama on Friday, and that he played a significant, though unspecified, role in working out a deal to preserve automaker Opel and much of its German-based operations and employment.

A White House official confirms to FOX that Obama called Merkel on Friday and that the talks were "constructive."

The official adds Obama made no commitments of U.S. tax dollars to make the Opel deal work.

It's kool aid, it's just not that filling, that's why they keep drinking it.

How nice. Barack Obama is busy saving German jobs at Opel while 600,000 a month are going up in smoke in this country.

Wanna bet he offered Opel some goodies in the US?

It's a misleading article (at least, Merkel is); Obama would, by default, have affected - notice how I omit 'help' - Opel because it is a wholly owned subsidiary (think Saturn, but European) of General Motors. So, while Merkel is a devote of Euronomics, she would say something along the lines of "Obama did something" because when you hand money to GM, you're in effect handing money to Opel as well.

Well, yes, and although Obama technically may have gave Opel no taxpayer money, he could give them a piece of GM's ass and legalistically comply with that.

Bingo bango; Europe has a hard time coming up with large amounts of avaliable capital because it's system is broken and devoted against large manifestations of capital reserves? By all means, ask America for some bailouts.

No taxpayer money mind you, Obama will just slice off a bigger piece of GM's flesh for the Germans and Opel.

There's no distinction between GM and the Imperial Federal Government; mind you. So really it will be with taxpayer's money... Though that could be sarkasm I hear in you but my sarcastic meter is on the fritz so maybe not.
