Years ago I saw army trucks patrolling the streets in Mexico and I thought "thank goodness we don't have that in the US!" Now we do. Are we becoming a crueler country?

This is why I stopped trying to converse with people on aocial media. The inhumane and blatantly-personal attacks are horrible. You have no idea what I am about, yet you and dozens of others attacked me personally because I asked a question you were uncomfortable with. Yes, of course. I wasn't talking about border security, I was talking about military patrolling the streets, which is what the OP mentioned. And I was talking about the overall move toward a more authoritarian, Orwellian surveillance / police state.

But evidently some knee-jerk reacting dummies here either missed that point entirely, or they are perfectly fine with us moving more and more toward a militarized police state, because they're reacting to the problem the government created, hence demonstrating my point.

I guess that depends on the area. Some border regions basically need this approach. Was it created by the government intentionally? Quite possibly. It doesn't remove the need for more security though.

At best, we could set up a privatized security force that citizens could buy into for protection. That might be preferable over the actual military.

I agree. But another thing that some folks don't seem to be aware of is that sometimes those left wing extremists are agent provocateurs, or paid protesters, for the very reason I already stated.
