Majority of Greenlanders favor Trump’s plan to join US: Poll

What would the American people actually be getting from this deal to send our tax dollars to Greenland?
It's not complicated. Greenland occupies a strategic arctic position, it is the site of a US airbase and a very important early warning radar installation. Securing that over the long term is in our interest.

The island is rich in rare earth elements that we are currently sourcing from China, so having a stable source that is not dependent on China is a benefit to the US.

We already send our tax dollars to Greenland. If Greenland was a US protectorate, we might get something back- but in any event we would have stable supply of those resources and the confidence of knowing we aren't going to be booted off the island, which would put a big hole in our national defense.

Okay. Now who's we? As I pointed out earlier we don't have any nationalized energy companies. When you say we will have access to those resources are you using the royal we to describe private corporations?

Greenland has always allowed us to deploy military personnel for strategic purposes

As to minerals, the way to access them is through diplomacy and trade agreements. We don’t get to just go in there and take what we want.

Offer safe passage to ambitious Canandians and you will gain a mass of Canadians too I imagine. People want opportunity and a Constitution that ensures accountability for abuses by the state and any of their criminal actors and apparatuses. MSN

How many of them actually understand what would happen?

None, because nobody knows.

Denmark pays 2/3rd of their costs... would the US do that? Doubtful. The US would just turn up and screw them over.

It is only 60,000 people

But how to we justify subsidizing Greenland while we don’t offer similar benefits to other territory’s

Essentially if Greenland became a part of the US, it'd be mined to hell, the Greenlanders would lose their autonomy, large corporations would have way more power.

There's a huge difference between the Danish govt which usually has people with empathy and compassion, and a concern for the local people, and the US govt which is full of total assholes like Trump, Biden etc, who only care about their egos and money.

Exactly what they fear
Greenland has mineral wealth. They fear outsiders coming in and taking it.

Why would they trust Trump?

I don't think they do.

I think they want independence for emotional reasons. Give them a vote, get some facts out there and they'll see the problems of A) being alone and B) being a part of the USA

I don’t think an island of that size with only 60,000 people can be independent. Most are fishermen
They can’t handle infrastructure, security, health, education…

What does Trump offer that Denmark doesn’t?

Yes, that's a big issue too. And 2/3rds of their tax income comes from Denmark. They can't afford anything, unless they open up to mining in a huge way.

I think Greenland is playing like a free agent.

Denmark provides many social programs but Greenland feels disrespected. They will use the threat of allying with the US to get better treatment.
People want the chance to participate in a capitalistic society and be the best they can be. That's why Greenlanders love Trump and the US.

I think that is what Greenlanders fear
Capitalists coming in, exploiting their resources and leaving the residents with nothing

Lots of natural resources. The 50,000 current residents wouod be well served to flush Denmark and become a TERRITORY.

NO NEED FOR GREENLAND TO BE A STATE.

Their entire population can fit into a mid tier college football stadium.

We should give them an offer and see what the residents want.

It is not complicated. We are not going to parachute the 82 airborne into NUUK.

DUH.
You are right, but it would be the 11th Airborne out of Alaska. A single company could do the job.

Are you kidding? These people have nothing now. Trump can bring in well-paying energy and mining jobs. The man is a master of economics.
