When I consider supporters being burned there was immense backlash when George HW Bush went back on his, "Read my lips: no new taxes" pledge.

And then there was LBJ. He ran as the anti-war candidate in 1964 and soon after the election he turned command of operations in Vietnam over to the military. His name was mud by 1968.

I recall GW Bush in his campaign speaking about being very careful about nation building. It sounded promising to me at the time and I was ready to vote for him.
