Considering we've only been around in some form or another for a few hundred thousands of years, who knows if other species created civilizations and faded away in the billions of years that came before us?

The greatest loss to human existence was the destruction of the Macedonian Library in Alexandrea Egypt by the Islamic empire or possibly Julius Caesar's hoards. Imagine what we could have learned about history and pre history if the priceless scrolls survived to this day.
