For over a century this has been the one and only official dimensions of home plate in baseball.

It never changes. Hundreds of millions have played, and most not very well. But it never changes. Can’t throw a strike? Too bad. 17”. Strikeout at bat too often? Too bad. 17”. Players getting better over the decades? 17”.

Life should not conform to you. You need to conform to life.

17”.

17" appears to be hypotenuse of a 12" right triangle. And the 8.5" sides seem to be 1/2 of that hypotenuse. On the other hand, this could have been derived from a 17" square. So which came first, the triangle or the square?

I can't recall who originally said it and I'm sure I'll misquote it, but somebody said a long time ago something to the effect that you're going to be a lot happier if you decide to adapt to your environment, rather than demanding that your environment adapt to your needs or wants.

This is what's wrong with the proggy things -- they demand that the world change to suit them. They want to go out without a coat in winter and demand that the weather be warmer. Bound to create a ton of unhappiness.

The problem comes when each umpire had a different idea of what 17 inches really is

Not surprisingly, you've gotten a variety of responses most of which are missing the point. Agreed upon standards for excellence should not be changed but what we see in all aspects of American life, the bar is being lowered.
