I might be going out on a limb here, but I'd guess Alex Pretti's stupidity was what forced them to shoot him.
Sometimes there's just no better way to deal with stupid people.

The accounts I've been hearing is that he ran in to 'rescue' the woman the agent pushed onto a snowback and then was fixing to arrest for obstruction.
He decided he needed to be a hero and rushed in to get the ICE Agents off her. That by itself is a crime by interfering with their lawful duties.
The current narrative is that one agent managed to get the gun and run away from the huddled bodies, and in his retreat, the gun accidentally discharged.
The narrative of the left is that they kicked and beat the woman, and when he tried to intervene, they wrestled with him, and during the course of the struggle, it was discovered he had a gun on him. Again, they managed to take the gun off him, but then they all stood back like Wyatt Earp at the OK corral and all of them just started blasting him as he lay there.
I suspect that when the investigations come out, the left isn't going to be too happy with the results and will then start screaming corruption and 'independent' investigations, meaning they want their clowns in there pronouncing murder regardless of the outcome of the investigations.
If that gun discharged accidentally, then that Agent needs to be disciplined for failing to secure a weapon at the scene. But that really should be the end of it.
The civilians were obstructing violently and were a threat to their safety.
I think I'm going to wait for the investigations to conclude.
Nope, no coverage, no hoopla, no vigil, nothing. To Democrats, just another dead Republican voter.

The agent grabbed the gun from Petti and did not take more than 2 steps before the weapon discharged
My guess is that Petti was carrying it with a round in the chamber

not necessarily
A police officer on patrol with a modern semi auto, such as a Glock or a Ruger is designed to safely carry a round in the chamber with no risk of accidental discharge
But many handguns do not have that feature
