Modern "science" believes that melanin is UV protection. However, they do not explain in any way the mechanism of such "protection". This especially does not fit with the fact that, on the contrary, white is considered a reflector of light.
This suggests the conclusion that melanin does not actually reflect, but attracts light, like the green pigment of plants. Plants also "sunbathe" when light falls on them, everything is the same here.
