There is truth in the OP in that people live in their own bubbles. When we were younger it was earning a living, raising kids, traveling a bit, politics mattered but at the periphery. Living in a large city, mostly liberal, helped too as opportunity and work reside there. This is the area the dems haven't learned to manage yet, people live in bubbles and media like Limbaugh, Fox, and other right wing media sources know that simple labels work and they use them well. Dog whistles work.

Yup. Public educators are as useless as the TSA. About the same caliber of person fills both jobs, typically a fat lazy person who went to school to be something else, but got stuck teaching. Not so much a political thing, just that public education is where they tend to dump losers .

Nothing has changed in this regard since the fifties. It has always been the strategy of 'vested interests' to keep the populace upset, uninformed and uninvolved. Those who see some 'leftist' or 'liberal' plot will be hard pressed to explain why those who came through 'education' from 1945 to 1965, relatively conservative times in the U.S., were just as lied to and misinformed as those from 1965 to present.
