The theory is that morality comes from God, not (say) nature or humans (two things that orthodox Christianity sees as irreparably tainted with sin)

I think you might look into the version of steroidal capitalism we have. The shooter grew up in a world where poor workers were seen as economic units in the bottom line rather than humans with families. When you move a plant from Detroit to Mexico, you can't think of the workers who are being displaced. You cannot factor in the human cost because of how the incentive structure works. So you have a situation where investors make a little more money by devastating whole communities of workers, who lose health care and die. But it's good for profit. This does not promote a respect for human life. Humans are seen as sub-functions of your profit when they should be seen as people with families to support.

Also, try to do some research that involves data not supplied by Big Government. Specifically, research the number of innocent civilians killed in Iraq because of cherry picked intelligence. When the Connecticut shooter sees how easily we kill people in foreign lands, he probably concludes that life is not valuable. Or what about the sweatshops in Asia and the global south that supply raw material and labor to our global markets? These people are held down by dictators we support because those dictators give us access to their resources. This is why we replaced the democratically elected Mozedeq with the brutal Shaw. When we show such disrespect for life, it is more likely to wear off on others.

And this doesn't mean I hate America or capitalism. I disagree with components of our foreign and economic policies in the same way you disagree with the New Deal or Welfare State. People have a right to disagree with what makes America special. And when you choose to demonize the opposition as "anti-American scum", you make it more likely that people will attack those scum. First off, when is it the school's job to teach morality? Schools are to learn academic subjects, not to teach you right from wrong. Things like that are life-learned experiences and from following good examples of others. If your parents were moral people, and you follow their example, then you'll be moral as well.

Teachers are supposed to be role models, people to look up to. They're not supposed to tell you how to live your life.

Think of it this way: If you grew up surrounded by violence and murder - say there was a shooting on your block every day - would you not learn that violence is a way of life? It's easy to say that you wouldn't, but there's a reason that, for example, gang violence begets more gang violence. In that case, its a direct result of growing up around constant violence.

Are there exceptions to the rule? Of course! There are always exceptions.
