When I was a young National Guardsman, back in the day, with Kent State not that far in memory, we had this major who was conducting Civil Disturbance Training.

One thing he said always stuck with me.

"When we are called out for Civil Disturbance Duty, remember that those people out there are not the enemy. They are your fellow citizens, they are damned angry about something, and they have every right to be."
