It is the job of the police to protect children from drive-by shootings, but now they can't even protect themselves. So this problem will only get worse.

Why put all this burden on teachers and police to teach people right from wrong? Really?

Clearly we need to replace welfare and prisons with incentives to stay off the public handouts.

Why not microlend where people have to earn the support because they stick to educational and business plans
to pay any money back that they borrow while they work their way up toward independence?

Why not reward business and property owners with tax breaks by working with teachers and police to lower the crime rates in their districts? Teach people the RICO laws where property abused for organized crime/racketeering/trafficking can be claimed as restitution. And claim property that can be converted into nonprofit assets to rebuild distressed communities.

Reward people for educational outreach and commitment not to tolerate invite or commit any more crimes that otherwise cost taxpayers 50K a person per year to keep them in prison; when that money is needed to hire teachers and pay to train more doctors and nurses to provide health care.

Work out business plans for each district where restitution for crime is paid back into developing preventative education and jobs in providing health and social services.

If residents have a vested interest in managing their own districts and resources like a campus, with sustainable jobs businesses housing education and service internships, then reducing and preventing crime will pay off. It will allow resources to be saved and invested back into building and expanding their programs to benefit their communities.

With every shooting, every rape, robbery, missing person or trafficking case or other crime committed,
why not set up a restitution plan to improve that community to deter and reduce repeat incidents.

How many jobs could we create for teachers, counselors, police and administrators to correct these problems?
Instead of wasting thousands, millions if not billions of dollars after the fact on punishing crime instead of preventing it?

If he had been living in Japan....he would have been serving 30 years for his gun crime....that is how you actually stop gun murder and save lives....but in Japan...they don't have to worry about being accused of racism for locking up gang members.....

This fortunately is NOT an issue in MY neighborhood.

It DOES happen in Oakland and Berkeley CA though.

In MY neighborhood the major crime issue is residential and car burglaries. The perps come here from elsewhere and break in. Most residential break in's are in the middle of the day when most people are gone to work.

Most car break in's are in the night from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m.

Ours is a middle class neighborhood so there are few alarm systems. Some people have a dog inside is all. The residences here are easy to break into with just a crowbar. The crowbar seems to be the tool of choice.

As for protecting children, I would normally view that as the prime responsibility of the PARENTS and NOT of the police.

The police are an investigation, complaint response, and riot control agency. They are NOT babysitters.

No. Kids should not be armed.

Kids should be supervised by their parents.

The parents should be armed though -- at least enough to be able to protect their kids.

Although just being armed particularly in the ghetto is not going to help you a lot against gangs because then you will simply be outgunned.

A ghetto gang consists normally of 4 highly armed gang bangers inside a ghetto cruiser. They usually have an assault weapon with them. The only way you can confront them is with your own assault carbine. But if you are outnumbered then you will be outgunned too.

Doesn't anybody watch Old West movies anymore? That's where it illustrates what constitutes a gunfight and how they are won or lost.
