Because of that neglect astronomers were not even aware that the earth received more heat during periods of increased sunspot activity than during the minimums. They had always concluded the obvious; logically large dark spots on the sun would reduce solar heat output, and that the sun was stable within a normal 11 year cycle.

The work that Walter Maunder compiled by 1894 which established records showing solar variability was ignored for almost 80 years, and study of the sun’s variability has only developed post 1981.
