In a Republic, actually
‘A Palestinian American student in Michigan is suing a middle school teacher and Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, claiming in federal court that the educator violated the student's First Amendment right by attempting to force the student to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. The East Middle School teacher, Carissa Soranno, according to the lawsuit, allegedly told the student, “Since you live in this country and enjoy its freedom, if you don’t like it, you should go back to your country.”

The student, 14, is referred to as D.K. in the suit and is represented in the claim in U.S. District Court in Detroit by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan and Arab American Civil Rights League. The student did not want to stand for the pledge because she believes the U.S. government has supported Israel in the Israel-Hamas war that has devastated Gaza and left thousands dead, according to the claim.

The suit, filed June 25, asks for a judgment that finds the educator's actions unconstitutional and awards damages, claiming Soranno's actions inflicted emotional distress on the student. A spokesperson for Plymouth-Canton Community Schools did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network. Soranno did not answer a voicemail left by a reporter at a phone number associated with her name.

"The right to freely speak — or not speak — is a form of protest that is fundamental to a well-functioning democracy — even when its exercise creates controversy or makes others uncomfortable," wrote Bonitsu Kitaba, interim legal director for the ACLU of Michigan, in a news release.’

Deport his ass.

If kids cannot give a pledge of allegiance to our nation, then they don’t deserve a seat in our public school system. Their parents can move back to whatever shit hole they came from.

This is the meaningless nonsense that the Leftist Democrats push onto national news. FFS who cares?

Happened to me as well, back in Vietnam era.
The pledge of allegiance is illegal to mandate.
That would violated the first amendment.
This is not "meaningless" or "nonsense".
It is crucial to any republic.

Deport his ass.

Anyone demanding a forced pledge of allegiance should deported.
Any republic has to defend the first amendment above all else.
Those who do not get that, should not be in a republic.

Deport his ass.

Agreed!
They can return and enjoy the 'freedom of speech' allowed in the nation they came from.
We don't need that deadwood kind here.

Slimeball student may have a "right" to decline, but there is no damage done to them worth money $$$ payment.
Meanwhile there should be a way to mark the student's decline in way to prevent granting of citizenship and encourage them to emigrate.

Sorry, if you have been permitted to be here, you swear allegiance until you leave. Simple as that.

You are under the good graces of the American government, act like it, damn it.

That totally undermines everything this republic is supposed to stand for.
This government does lots of things that are wrong.
Like Prohibition, the war on drugs, the take over of Vietnam, the invasion of Iraq, etc.
If you do not protect the first amendment, then the result is a dictatorship, not a republic.

Wrong.
The student is correct, that Israel is the illegal terrorist nation stolen from the indigenous Palestinians.
"Palestinians" are not indigenous.
Jews were in that land 4000+ years ago, have claim predating "Palestinians".
The student is an illegal terrorist here in our country and should receive a free one-way ticket out and to another nation of their choice.

Wrong.
It is the teacher who attempted to subvert the whole point of a republic.
The student should be praised for being smart and honorable.
It is those who support the crimes by Israel who should be deported.

What's the point of allegiance if you aren't required to swear it? What's the point of enjoying all the rights and privileges the government grants you as a citizen if you refuse to swear allegiance as a means of appreciation for what you were given?

The government does a lot of things wrong, but that's no excuse to be an ingrate. Stand and say the pledge.

The left cried, "Bake the cake!" once. Well, I say "say the pledge!"

Since you feel that way, then obviously you will be leaving us and going to another nation that 'stands for what it is supposed to'.
Don't let the door hit your arse on your way out.
You are no loss to our nation and certainly not wanted nor needed.
...
BTW;
Prohibition was repealed.
"drugs" have won that "war".
The USA never took over Vietnam, the communists did and it's on it's own.
There were close to a dozen reasons for removing the threats from Saddam's Iraq.

If you do not protect the first amendment, then the result is a dictatorship, not a republic.
This isn't a First Amendment issue, far from it. Not standing and saying the pledge is like spitting in the face of your benefactor and biting the hand that feeds you.

If your government gives you rights and privileges, you should be required to swear allegiance to it. You should be made to show appreciation for the freedom you enjoy.
