Lawmakers ban picketing of funerals in Arizona

This is a clear violation of the First Amendment and should be overturned in court. As much as I agree with all of you that the practices of the Westboro Baptist Church are vile, passing laws like this is how we start down the road to government taking our rights away piece by piece. Today it's banning wacko funeral protesters, but what will the new problem be tomorrow?

I agree and support Freedom Riders that protect funerals from the whack jobs like WBC. Baseball bat to the head works for me.
Arizona and their lazy legislators copied the Missouri law which has already been ruled unconstitutional.
Wannabe conservatives do not care. Ideology means more than the law.

Such violent rhetoric. someone reading this may actually hit someone with a baseball bat and then it'll be all your fault.

Waitaminute. Who are the "right wing loons?" The Westboro Baptist Church, or the politicians who want to keep them the hell away from funerals?
The Westboro Baptist Church & their homophobic-supporters.

Linkiepoo?

Now the Westboro idiots have said they will not picket the funeral of the little girl in exchange for air time on a radio show and evidently some radio show has given in. I hope they talk over them the entire air time. They still plan on picketing the rest of the funerals. Grrrr.

I object to calling them a Baptist Church. I think we should call them the Westboro Idiots.

^ What he said

They can say anything they like, mani. They just can't say it to the mourners face to face with spittle landing on them. Do you seriously believe any of us "needs" a right to disrupt funerals? Why's it so threatening to you to move them back, away from the mourners?

I believe that can be accomplished without enacting any new laws.

This is their SOP. They make the threat. The media jump up and down, the American people get outraged, they 'offer' a compromise, the media gives them what they wanted all the time. They want publicity. The media should tell them to fuck off. And wherever they show up, Americans - of both parties and no party - should come out, link arms and say 'no'.

How to create new jobs. Hire speech nazis. Forbid words. Write new dictionaries. print them. then start over. I wonder which words we are going to be forbaden to utter in liberland??

Willow, which words are you able to say where you are that you cannot utter from 300 feet away?

You've slid down the slippery slope.

I'd agree with you if the city refused to grant them a parade permit for any time or place, Willow. Or if they had sought to foreclose them from speaking altogether by any other means. But this law seems reasonably drawn, is one we can all abide by, and serves a legitimate need that cannot be met any other way.

I just don't share your fear that many more restrictions on speech or assembly will follow.

If they don't ban funeral protesters.....the next-day (chances are), local emergency-rooms will be OVERWHELMED with a plague of abrasions & broken-bones.

It is what it is.

No, this is not what was heard by the Supreme Court. Look up the Matthews case, the WBC was held to a similar distance in that case by a local ordinance like the one in this thread. The WBC won because the ordinance and buffer zone worked. The family in that case never saw or heard the WBC, the father who sued didn't even know they were there until after the fact. WBC won that case because it was based on the father seeking out the footage of the protest on WBC's own website.

If it had been all in person, IMO the outcome would (and should) have been very different.

I don't agree with you on this one. I feel it falls in the same realm as yelling fire in a theatre.

I could give a shit what it falls under..and one could make a case it is prohibiting the free exercise of religion.

This is something no human being should be asked to do..and that is..not to protest a funeral.

It's as a solemn event as your going to get in Human culture..all of them.

People in mourning deserve..well..have the absolute right..to mourn without "the noise" and in peace.

This is something so basic..it never should need to be legislated.

They have agreed to NOT protest the little girl's funeral...but ONLY in exchange for free air time on local radio and TV.

Furthermore, they still will protest at the other 5 funerals.

What does that tell you about these people?
