I personally am hoping that the Latter day Saints are correct about spiritual grown continuing even after we pass on into the afterlife?

I sure do hope that the Mormons are correct about this doctrine.

I suspect strongly that Mormons are right about this but I don't know what to say because the near death experiencers who had a Negative, Hellish or Purgatory sort of brush with death have warned us that our state at the time of our death felt like it was forever and forever and forever and forever?!

The Postmortal Spirit World
“Chapter 41: The Postmortal Spirit World,” Gospel Principles (2011), 240–44
The spirits are classified according to the purity of their lives and their obedience to the will of the Lord while on earth. The righteous and the wicked are separated (see 1 Nephi 15:28–30), but the spirits may progress as they learn gospel principles and live in accordance with them. The spirits in paradise can teach the spirits in prison (see D&C 138).

Spiritual growth in unallied with time. One may make a mountain of spiritual growth in mere seconds while others may make none in a hundred years. Further, the term 'afterlife' is misleading. There is no afterlife. We have more than one life. Learning and growth continue after we die because we not only go on to another life (usually), but do much learning (and hopefully growth) in the short times between new lifes.

You reap your beliefs.

I have to admit that there is a great deal of truth in this idea.

Former Atheist Mellen Thomas Benedict was shocked to find his consciousness or spirit or soul outside of his body during a brush with death in 1982. He sees a glimmer of light and assumes that the Being of Light that he meets will be nice and will answer his questions. Yes, Mellen Benedict gets brilliant answers to every question that he asks.

I got the impression from the near death experience of Mellen Benedict that an Atheist may well be able to ask and receive answers that a Christian might never dare to even ask?

[Mellen Benedict] :

1. About Mellen-Thomas Benedict

In 1982 Mellen-Thomas Benedict (died 2017) suffered from terminal brain cancer and died; but miraculously lived to tell about it. While showing no vital signs for 90 minutes, Benedict had perhaps the most transcendental near-death experience (NDE) ever documented. While on the Other Side, Benedict journeyed through various afterlife realms and was given access to Universal Intelligence by which he was allowed to absorb a tremendous amount of spiritual and scientific knowledge including the nature of reincarnation. Benedict’s enthusiastic curiosity during his NDE took him far into the remote depths of existence – and even beyond – into the energetic void of nothingness behind the Big Bang. He was shown in holographic detail the evolution of both Mother Earth (“Gaia”) and humanity and experienced the cosmology of our soul’s connection with Gaia. He was given knowledge about humanity’s role in the Universe including a beautiful vision of humanity’s future for the next 400 years. Deepak Chopra, in his book “Life after Death: The Burden of Proof,” recounts Benedict’s journey at length and says, “Mellen is an encyclopedia of the afterlife.” In the view of the webmaster of this site, on this web page you will read the most inspirational NDE ever documented.

Maybe a Christian does not need to ask such questions. 'Just sayin.'

Wow!

From my researching the Bible since 1972 and near death experience accounts since 1990, I would have to say that your answer is an excellent one indeed.

Near death experiencer John J. Davis was shown something very much along the line of this.

Why were you chosen to receive the grand tour of the other side?
I wake up every day and I think, I’ve had such a unique experience and I’ve learned so much from it. I think why was it me, why did I have this experience, and I don’t know why.
....

How were you feeling emotionally during your NDE?
I felt more peace and love than I ever felt during my entire life. When we are on the earth plane, we don’t feel the love of God in the same way we do on the other side. You hear again and again that people who have had near-death experiences don’t want to come back. They want to stay on the other side immersed in God’s love.

Good point!

Near death experiencer Robert Marshall received forty three hours and twenty eight minutes of being directly mentored by Messiah Yeshua - Jesus. Then Jesus healed Robert's brain and internal organs and sent him back into this world with a powerful message. His shocking case is brilliantly documented in his book that I read a few months ago.

"Upon entering the emergency room, the admission staff quickly observed the medical emergency: I was having difficulty breathing. I was immediately escorted to the care area of the ER and met with a member of the medical team who performed the perfunctory vital signs and symptom identification.

The hospital staff responded to my symptoms and ordered a new CT scan and a broader, all- encompassing blood test. The results showed I had “unstable/abnormal vital signs and life-threatening conditions,” as described in my medical record. I was at risk of my airway being blocked by the mass indicated on the CT scan and I needed emergency intubation with ventilator support. They moved me to a surgical suite, inserted the oral intubation tube, and admitted me to the ICU immediately."
Emergency Room Medical Note:

IMPRESSION:

Increased inflammatory change in the deep left neck soft tissues with worsening swelling of the epiglottis and moderate to severe airway narrowing. Additional inflammatory change involving the left submandibular fossa and submandibular gland as well as the left anterior belly of the digastric. Findings suggest worsening infectious pharyngitis/tonsillitis/epiglottitis. No drainable collection.

Left glossotonsillar sulcus fullness persists. Although superimposed infection is likely, evaluation for an underlying malignancy should be pursued. Direct visualization and tissue sampling may be warranted by ENT. Follow-up CT neck with contrast in one to 3 months is recommended to confirm resolution.

No cervical lymphadenopathy by size criteria.

Incidental severe spinal canal narrowing C5-6 due to ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament.

For the next two days, I rested comfortably, my body fighting the infection with the help of IV antibiotics, and the intubation tube that kept the mass away from my airway.

PROFOUND NDE: BRAIN DEAD for 90 MINUTES; Met JESUS in HEAVEN & RETURNED w/ MESSAGE | Robert Marshall

Maybe we are all part of one encompassing conscience that includes all these beliefs naturally and no human is truly alone.

Mormonism is a false pseudo-Christian belief system.

Mormonism is a really boring religion. There are any number of Mormon religious services online, and they really don't have that much excitement. Maybe if they installed coffee bars in their temples, the people would have a little bit more pizazz.

It's a typical dead religion. Just like Jehovah witnesses.

But at least the leadership of the Latter day Saints are allowed to speak openly about what they learned from a near death experience.

“For four weeks, I was somewhere with a foot in another world,” President Holland explained. The Apostle says that during this time, he received admonitions that he was “in effect, told to take back to the Church.”

He touched on these principles in his April 2024 conference talk and shared more details in his heartfelt RootsTech comments.

1. Pray Always

The first lesson President Holland spoke about was to pray more frequently and meaningfully. He said:

“I thought I prayed all the time, more or less. But the lesson was, ‘Pray more than you pray.’ However much you’ve prayed, pray more. And in however many places you’ve prayed, pray in more places. However many times during the day you pray, pray more times in the day.

“And it started to give meaning to me, an overwhelming meaning to me that … it was quite literal when God had said, ‘pray always.’”

That fits perfectly with what near death experiencers are taught no matter what their religious background is.

3.

Across cultures and faiths, prayer is often viewed as a sacred connection between humans and God – a way to express gratitude, seek guidance, or ask for help. But what happens to those prayers once spoken or thought? Accounts from NDErs and spiritual teachers suggest a profound truth: all sincere prayer is answered, though not always in the ways we might expect. From Edgar Cayce’s reassurance that we shouldn’t dictate how God should respond, to Betty Eadie’s deeply moving realization that every prayer is heard and answered with divine wisdom, these insights reveal that prayer is more than just wishful thinking – it is a dynamic, spiritual force that engages with the universe in unseen but powerful ways. Whether the answer comes in unexpected ways, or through personal spiritual growth, these testimonies affirm that no heartfelt prayer goes unnoticed, and that God’s responses are shaped by a love and understanding far beyond our limited perspective.

“All prayer is answered. So don’t tell God how to answer it.” (Edgar Cayce)

God answers all prayers perfectly

“God has a vantage point we can never perceive. He sees into our eternal pasts and futures and knows our eternal needs. In his great love he answers prayers according to this eternal and omniscient perspective. He answers all prayers perfectly.” (Betty Eadie)

Every sincere prayer is answered although not always in the way expected

One of the key lessons Betty Eadie learned during her NDE involved the spiritual mechanics of prayer. Eadie was shown that every sincere prayer is heard and responded to, although not always in the way one might expect. She was told that prayers are powerful forces of energy that are never wasted, and that even when people feel their prayers are unanswered, they are still influencing the situation in unseen ways. (Betty Eadie)

If you need excitement from your religion, then I guess that says something.

It's either true or it's not. Big question is how you determine that. Just saying "not" because you don't "agree" kind of says you are the center of the universe.

Which you (and everyone of us) are not.

I would disagree.

Your day to day gauntlet was designed to refine you.

It may not be apparent, but if you are growing if you are trying to do good and succeeding (for the right reasons).

It's very small and incremental.

That process was taking place for a long time before we got here (IOW where we came from)

And it will continue forever after we die physically...but continue to the resurrection and beyond.

Latter day Saints are the largest Christian church that I know of that has embraced near death experience accounts with enthusiasm.

I am of the belief that so much critical information is being revealed to and through these people who have a brush with death that this gives Latter day Saints a special edge on explaining some of the really complicated and troubling questions that have troubled religious people for millennia.

I believe that is only now in these latter days when we really can understand most of the really big mysteries of this world and the unseen realms aroud us.

The anger of the Lord shall not return, until He has executed and till He has performed the thoughts of His heart; in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly." [Jeremiah 23:20]

3. The Cities of Light and the NDE

Information gleaned from individuals who have visited or been permitted to see the next world suggest that this otherworld has two major divisions. The first division has been named “Cities of Light” by Raymond Moody, Betty Eadie, (a former Mormon), Melvin Morse, and others. The other division has been variously labeled “a realm of bewildered spirits” by Moody, a place “devoid of love” by George Ritchie, a place of “earthbound/lingering spirits” by Eadie, and the “sphere of wasted, elusive, and misused opportunities” by Joy Snell.

Individuals who have had an extensive visit to the otherworld report that its structure is very complex. In the previous chapter it was noted that individuals acquired new senses in the spirit world, one of which is the ability to “know” others’ thoughts and desires. This enhanced sense seems to be a factor in the ultimate placement of each individual in the spirit world.

There is evidence that a type of judgment occurs at the time of death. This judgment involves a review of a person’s life and results in their placement in the spirit world.

In 1943 Dr. George Ritchie reported a near death experiencer that eventually got Dr. Raymond Moody inspired to begin research on this topic. Dr. Ritchie was shown several invisible higher dimensions that we can go into depending mostly on the level of love that we learn during our lives.

b. His Guided Tour of the Earthbound Realm with Jesus

The following is the testimony of George Ritchie’s tour of the Earthbound Realm: Then Jesus begins to take Ritchie on a journey through various realms of the afterlife. They fly toward a large city on Earth where they notice a group of assembly-line workers at work. They witnesses the spirit of a woman trying desperately to grab a cigarette from the workers who were oblivious to her presence. This woman had died severely addicted to cigarettes and was now cut off from the one thing she desperately desired most.

Ritchie realizes how the spirits in these realms immediately know the thoughts of other spirits around them. This is the reason they tend to group together with other spirits. It is too threatening to be around others who knew and disagreed with their thoughts.

Jesus leads Ritchie to a house somewhere on Earth where he is shown the spirit of a young man following his living family members around and begging them for forgiveness. But the family members are completely unaware of his presence. Jesus tells Ritchie the young man committed suicide and is “chained to every consequence of his act.”

They then traveled to a bar somewhere on Earth which was filled with sailors drinking heavily. Spirits surrounded the sailors as they tried desperately, and in vain, to grasp the shot glasses to get a drink. Other spirits tried to control the sailors’ alcoholic behavior. Ritchie learns these are the spirits of people who died still having a severe alcoholic addiction which went beyond the physical. He is bewildered as he observes one of the sailors passing out causing the sailor’s protective aura surrounding him to crack open. When it does, it allows a spirit to scramble into the sailor’s unconscious body. This scene was repeated over and over.
....
....

e. His Observations of the Temple of Wisdom

The following is the testimony of George Ritchie’s Temple of Wisdom and Heavenly City Experience. They then travel to a completely different realm where some kind of enormous university is located. Spirits dressed as monks busily and happily engaged in some form of artistic behavior or research. An enormous library exists here where all the important books of the universe are assembled. Ritchie asks Jesus if this is heaven. These are the spirits of people who grew beyond selfish desires while on Earth; but, like the spirits in hell, these spirits cannot see Jesus either.

f. His Vision of the Heavenly City

Ritchie is then taken into outer space toward a distant city made of brilliant light – similar in description to the heavenly city in the Book of Revelation (see also Revelation 21:10-27.) This is the place where people go who have become like Jesus while on Earth – a place where love is the dominant focus of life. This is heaven he realizes; but he is not allowed to enter it. Instead, Jesus shows him the future of Earth and is told to return to his physical body. At this point, Ritchie is revived from death.
