Could be new approaches to weapons are finally catching up to science fiction.

No need for artillery, ready to fire and retire A LOT. I reckon there is still a way to go in development and deployment, but there seem to be some folks out there working on some next-level stuff.

we have tested rail guns that can launch with power a large projectile a good distance that can punch through armor with tungsten head but yeah lasers would be cool, star wars is not far away

We are like 98 percent into mastery of this tech especially on land mounted systems that stay still. Really only thing left to figure out is on Mobile systems. Mobile systems experience vibration from movement and throw off the focusing mirror system. They gave to be recalibrated often on Mobile systems. They also have issues with long distance shots going through multiple atmosphere types. Throws of accuracy and spreads out the beam making it less powerful. Still some improvement to be made but theses weapons have use right now. And yes the firing cost is way below the cost of artillery and missiles.
