Make Ready

In the mid-eighties, I helped Pacific Bell and K&B Engineering, as a strand mapper and field engineer, when they first constructed the plant for cable tv in East Palo Alto, Palo Alto, Atherton, Portola Valley and Menlo Park, CA. After the mapping, make ready was mostly measuring how high the wires on the pole were and giving instructions.

“Make ready” work is the process of ensuring the utility poles, upon which the fiber-optic cable will be strung, are in suitable condition to receive the cable. This process includes surveying the condition of each pole, determining what improvements, if any, are necessary, and then making those improvements to each pole.
