Kamala Harris is succeeding in accomplishing something none of Donald Trump’s adversaries have since 2016: Turning off his political oxygen supply by refusing to engage with his manufactured spectacles of insults and taunts, or with the often wholly substance-free issues that preoccupy the press.
As last Thursday’s CNN interview of Harris and her running mate Tim Walz made clear, she’s resolutely unwilling to let the press — or Trump himself — set the agenda for her presidential campaign. In the process, she’s managed to blunt the tools Trump has repeatedly used to undermine his opponents: drawing them into responding to his schoolyard slights, and turning the media’s pursuit of purportedly “legitimate” questions about his opponents — many of them formulated by GOP partisans — into political weapons.
Harris’s refusal to engage with Trump on his terms represents a break from how Democrats traditionally have dealt with him. In related news, her favorables continue to rise while an obviously flustered Trump flails at ghosts and searches in vain for a smear campaign that will allow him to regain the initiative.
It’s hardly a coincidence that over the past several weeks, the power of the press to impact the tenor and focus of the presidential campaign — and the power of Trump to do the same — has been suddenly thrown into question. By refusing to engage with Trump’s taunts or play by journalists’ rules, Harris has upended presumptions about politics that have dominated during most of the past decade. And that’s a good thing.
If she can do that, and if she can stay focused and not spiral into verbosity, she'll look pretty good. I suspect the few remaining undecideds are just hoping for a normal, decent, young enough adult for a change. Enough junior high drama.

Well, on one hand yes..congrats to the Harris team for playing it perfectly. Trump’s all-anger/all-the-time strategy has a key flaw. If you’re running that offense against Mitt Romney or Joe Biden it does well. Entitled (or seemingly entitled) rich white guys are good foils for the populist message and he can call them every name in the book. You portray yourself as “average” and for the working class. And his supporters eat it up.
Trump can’t run the offense (pun intended) he wants to run against a black woman. The misogyny and racism he (and most of his supporters) want to unleash can’t be explained away. And, what’s worse for the blob, is that if you want to say Joe Biden is on drugs, you can get surrogates to do that for you:
You’re not going to find too many surrogates who want to start hurling the racial slurs or saying degrading things about women. They have their own careers to think about.
On the other hand...
Nothing else has worked for those who have engaged with the blob--regardless of party or profession. Megan Kelly said fact checking the blob is like trying to nail jello to the wall. Somehow she still supports him....because there is no where else for her to go. So kudos again to the Harris team but really--the strategy was pretty self evident.
PS: It’s also saving them a lot of money and lets them stay on message to not get into the mud with Trump.

Relative to undocumented immigrants, US-born citizens are over 2 times more likely to be arrested for violent crimes, 2.5 times more likely to be arrested for drug crimes, and over 4 times more likely to be arrested for property crimes.
