Thought I'd put this up just for fun. Internationally PM Harper has balls of steel dealing with Iran.

Domestically he's kept our economic stick on the ice.

But at home he's a softie.

I love this guy. Not just because he's Conservative but because he and his wonderful wife foster cats at their Official Residence. Our equivalent of the White House.

How cool is this?

And this is truly on his Official Website:

All too often, family pets such as dogs and cats find themselves in shelters as a result of being abandoned or rescued.

The Harpers are proud to support and participate in the Ottawa Humane SocietyÂ’s Foster Program, which provides temporary homes for pets in the community who are not yet ready for adoption.

The program fosters out animals with mild health or behaviour issues who need individual care and nurturing to help them recover before they are adopted by new, loving foster families.

Laureen and Stephen have been foster parents to many cats during the past year. At any given time, the Harpers have provided foster care to numerous cats at their Ottawa home.

Similar programs are in place across Canada. Foster pet programs help thousands of animals – including cats, dogs, birds and rabbits – each year. These programs allow:

Those who want to make a difference for an animal to do so, without making a long-term commitment.
Foster parents to see if they are ready for long-term pet ownership.

Contact your local SPCA or Humane Society to find out if they offer a foster pet program.

I/we have fostered for my entire adult life and can testify that its the most satisfying, most fun and does the most good of almost anything you can do. Really, its a lot like being a grand parent. You get the enjoy the best but then you get to hand them over to be put up for adoption.

Fostered kittens and puppies are the first to be placed because they've been spoiled and socialized. They're the first to come to the front of the cage and demand to be taken home.

If it moves, spay/neuter and if you love puppies and kittens, talk to your local shelter about fostering.

That is so cool - I love that! I foster dogs (kind of why I've ended up with 5) - but to see someone like a PM doing so and talking about it is way cool :) Transcends politics imo.

That's the thing about fostering. You really have to get a mind set that, when graduation day comes, you're going to let the go. Otherwise, you run the risk of becoming the crazy person down the road with 37 dogs/cats.

Oh, I know :) Part of the problem I have is some of the dogs I've fostered ended up not being very adoptable - not to general pet owners, so I've ended up keeping them. A few, however, were so endearing I couldn't let them go. My personal limit is 5 and since 3 are seniors, I only have the two young dogs that need regular work.
