Just curious, why is the federal taxpayer going to give $8B to rebuild a bridge in Baltimore. A bridge that is apparently covered by insurance.

The losses of revenue, I'd think.

Not my field, but the costs of berthing one of these huge cargo ships are .... uuuuuuge biz. I doubt running a port is really a cost effective enterprise though. lol
Yeah, you would be wrong. The government is self-insured. They do not pay private companies to handle risk.

The value of the vessel was about $200 million and that is the limit of liability for the claim, unfortunately. It will take years to settle the claim.

I don't know if anyone has raised this from the latest funding Bill but many online posters have.

They ask why and how?

Anyone know? I'd like to understand.
So what? we send 4 Billion a year in state welfare to the genocidal Sickraelis, what's the big deal?

I'm guessing that there is a court battle going on so the insurance won't pay until they lose the court case. Meanwhile, someone had to pay to get the bridge fixed. Theoretically, the money will be reimbursed when the court case is over. Just my guess.

Estimate is $2 billion. Funding is for $8 billion.

Why?

uh huh. And you don't think the port of baltimore took a hit. Rock you wree NEVER on a boat.

They've been trying to build a new Interstate Bridge between WA and OR for 20+ years, and still no bridge...

Baltimore should float a bond for the bridge replacement, and collect tolls to pay for it. That's what everyone else has to do.

Fed funding should not exceed 50%.

The economic impact is not insurable either. I told you what maritime laws says. Yes, I agree that it sucks, but you cannot get blood out of a turnip. Can you?

As for my experience, tell me how I earned three Sea Service ribbons and made 5 deployments in 10 years?

It's an Interstate highway.

It's an Interstate highway.
So what? I-5 is an Interstate highway too, and the Feds aren't coughing up for a new Interstate bridge in WA-OR.

50% is the max. Federal contribution. Baltimore should be no different. And the funds should come from the Highway Trust fund- that's what it's for.

Musk and Vivek are like dogs on a bone. Vivek had already posted on youtube a short clip about some of the fluff long before Elon did.

I just hope Elon is also as active and direct with Trump when he is in office and spending goes off of the rails. Trumps old "I am the debt king" cannot proceed in the current economic situation the U.S is in, thanks to decades of loose funds.

China is driven to bankrupt America. The whole party will be over then without any reprieve for citizens unless you're a billionaire and can move your capital with ease at good rates.

DOGE might save the U.S dollar and save millions of human lives if the world averts WWIII when Americas decline ensures its enemies strike.
Well Thank You, Captain Positivity! :spinner:

The way that works is locals and state are responsible for sections of interstates, but Federal roads are Federal roads.

State roads and County roads and city streets are a thing, too.

Once you reach a certain age in life you just don't gaslight yourself anymore. I recall saying openly that if Biden won there would be wars, though I assume one of them would be in the Pacific. Regardless. Here we are.

I am telling you guys, if America defaults, it will result in millions of dead humans. This is how critical it is for America to remain a solvent Empire. I don't take this as hyperbole. This is the year 1984 of our time.

Calm your tits and worry about the son of Fidel Castro being the leader of your country, ok?
That's not good. You gotta change that to get anywhere near back onto the right path.

My guess is Baltimore needs the bridge.

Good, more info......so the taxpayers are on the hook for $8 billion for a $2 billion dollar bridge but Maryland gets the insurance money?
With the way the government's doing nowadays, I wouldn't surprised if that is exactly the case.

I'm so old I remember when Spiro Agnew had to resign for taking an envelope full of cash from a contractor

Our Congress today just does it in broad daylight
