Gettysburg was lost the first day, when Lee was too cautious and didn't commit in force early on. The entire strategic and grand tactical situation would have been entirely different if he had committed early on; one of the few time Lee wasn't at his best re making decisions. Lees wins every time when the timetable is speeded up; no Little Round Top and no Culp's Hill; Confederates control both. Even Jeb Stuart was late.

Lots of 'what if's', but the timid response on the first day is the main reason by far. He should have just continued on his way to Philadelphia and New Jersey and raided the railroads.

It is my belief the objective was to turn votes to those pushing for a truce to let the south succeed. Public opinion could be swayed by taking the horrors of war to the front door of northern voters.

And, My ancestors back then were from Tennessee and joined the first Union cavalry regiment formed in that state. You're just programmed moron, is all.

The plan was to raid as far north as possible, hoping to do just that. Gettysburg was actually a distraction, wasn't meant to become a major battle.
