It was a different time. In those days performers were the hired help. Particularly in Britain. And obviously why they all came to America, not just for the larger market.
But as for Lennon, again his word... he said his beliefs aligned with socialism... but yet... he was the wealthiest entertainer in the world at the time. Special kind of hypocrisy.

I’ve read almost every book on the Beatles and Lennon was no Socialist.
He, like myself, felt everyone should have an opportunity, but he never said, outside of the lyrics of Imagine, that everyone should live an equal life.
He was also extremely harsh on any artist who criticized the Beatles.

I idolized Lennon when I was a kid. As a matter of fact, I was only a few blocks from the Dakota the night Lennon was shot.

Lennon was no saint. He was a hypocrite and not a terribly pleasant person from what I read. Some of the things he said about Julian were uncalled for. Far be it for me to make a judgement call given his early childhood of tragedy and family drama.

I still enjoy his music. More as a Beatle than a solo artist though. He was a brilliant songwriter and singer and will be listened to for the years to come.
