Jim Webb 2016

Webb has crossover appeal. There isn't a Republican alive that would vote for Hillary......but quite a few would vote for Webb.
I think you've got that exactly backwards. Hawkish Republicans would find Hillary extremely palatable and hate Webb.

That's a great reason the right shouldn't listen to their hawks. Between Webb and Hillary... which one has military experience? Which one was a Marine? Which one was Secretary of the Navy under Reagan?

They're both pro-defense industry, Webb is a Senator from Virginia, Virginia has the third highest military spending going into the state in the country. Hillary is the one who convinced Obama to go ahead with the troop surge in Afghanistan against the advice of Biden.

This is exactly part of Webb's problem...he has too much in common with Hillary and not as much to make him stand apart.

Hillary's a blood sucking vulture! Webb could have waltzed into a second Senate term but he stepped down! He has NOTHING in common with Hillary!

Hillary voted for the war in Iraq for political reasons... and Webb has opposed war in Iraq since FREAKIN 1990! But despite that his son served there during the Bush administration anyways!

hbh is right the Ds have no bench acceptable to independents so this will be a woman's vote election either Hillary or Warren.

I kinda see Jim Webb as the Rick Santorum of the Democratic Party in some ways (minus the religious nuttery)
What? Are you saying Jim Webb is a crazy person?

A crazy person, no.

Someone who doesn't have the temperment to be President? Maybe.

Let's look at his record. He resigned as Reagan's Navy Secretary because Reagan told him to cut back on a Navy that was already bloated. As Reagan said in his diary at the time, ""I don't think Navy was sorry to see him go"

then there was the time he got into a hissy with President Bush at a reception for new Senators when the President asked how his son was doing. Frankly, it was not the kind of decorum we need from a President who has to actually, you know, work with people. I want a guy who is going to roll up his sleeves and work with people he doesn't agree with to get things done. Webb isn't that guy.

You dont like him...there is a mark in his favor.

Yeah, that's the way to go, guy. Mindlessly ignore the argument made.

After spending billions on expanding the Navy, Reagan tossed aside the notion and instructed the newly appointed SecNav to begin taking it down. Webb is a mission oriented guy. His job was SecNav. He fought for his department. Damned sorry of him.

Bush II foolishly committed troops in a war that had little or nothing to do with US security and was surrounded with like minded drones. Webb has a spine made of something other than spaghetti. If Bush didn't want to hear from other than yes men he shouldn't ask. Protocol all too often prevents important questions from being asked.

I don't know of anyone calling Webb a right winger or Hillary a "DINO"..... Hillary is a corporatist, that there's no doubt of. She's very very pro-big bank and even pro-defense industry. But I'd say on social issues she's more liberal or at least she'll pretend to be to appease voters.
Go to some of the Liberal forums. The Democrat base wants Fauxcahontas or (God forbid) Bernie. They see the last 6 years as a success and want to continue the downward spiral of the country to Socialism. They are indeed calling Hillary a DINO as there's absolutely NO excitement for her candidacy. They're calling Webb a racist because he has the guts to tell the truth. The Democrat party has abandoned the white working class.

JW, you are aware Madame Hillary saw the exact same CIA intel that Bush saw. You are aware she was front and center in favor of the Iraq war. You are aware President Bubba also wanted to invade Iraq unless Saddam came clean because he too was fearful Saddam was building nukes.
The Iraq war was a disaster because of the way we handled things AFTER Saddam was toppled. We stayed there far too long and ended up being the muscle for corrupt leaders.
Same in Afghanistan.

Why? By 1988, the purpose of the build up had already been accomplished. The USSR was agreeing to arms reductions. There was no need to keep WWII vintage ships on line when the Soviets were mothballing their older ships.

In short, even the Navy was happy to see Webb go.

I think the issue is a time and place. This was a friendly reception at the WH for new Senators. It was not the place to make a scene, and Webb made a scene. This is not the kind of guy I want as President, someone who lacks decorum and judgement.

Democrats have openly embraced Communism, they want to tell your kids what to eat and they want to take your 401(k).

It doesn't matter if it's Hillary, Webb, or Lizzy Cheekbones, a vote for Dems is a vote for more Communism

Well, this Yahoo! piece tells me Webb has zero chance at the Dem nomination. The PC Police won't let it happen:

Go to any activist meeting or liberal dinner party, and chances are you will hear a pretty consistent narrative to explain this trend. Basically, it goes like this: White men, and especially Southern white men, are just inherently racist and afraid of social change, and so they’re easily manipulated by Republicans and have turned their backs on Obama. But that’s really OK, because the demographics of the country are rapidly shifting, and very soon there will be enough black and Latino voters — not to mention women of all races — to tip the balance of any national election into the Democratic column.

Webb finds this theory downright offensive. In his view, Democrats have focused so much of their rhetoric and their programs on racial minorities that they’ve basically forgotten about all those white, working-class voters who face some of the same economic hardships but feel like all the focus is on the poor.

“I think this is where Democrats screw up, you know?” Webb told me. “I think that they have kind of unwittingly used this group, white working males, as a whipping post for a lot of their policies. And then when they react, they say they’re being racist.”

Back in 2010, under a Wall Street Journal headline that referred to the “myth of white privilege,” Webb called for an end to federal affirmative action programs that aren’t need-based, saying they no longer helped African-Americans and only served to embitter white voters. More recently, including in our conversation, he has obliquely assailed “interest groups” that divide the parties by race.

Yes, the PC police are responsible...

not that Webb is a narcissistic asshole who made no friends on either side of the aisle.

Come to think of it, he's probably your perfect candidate A guy so full of himself he can't see what anyone else is thinking.

Bad, Bad that is a no-no. Never interfere with an opponent's self destruction. At the rate the Ds are electing Rs on the state and local level there will be no effective statewide D parties in at least 37 states as an LP I welcome this outcome.

I'd love to know what's going on behind the scenes. Sanders wants to run, but he could ding Hillary pretty badly (much as what's going to happen on the GOP side). He's ore of a loose cannon in that environment.

Warren vs. Hillary would be fascinating.

Guy, get real. Now, if you weren't like 15, I'd give you a pass on the fact that this is pretty much cyclical. Obama is leaving his party the same place Bush-43, Clinton and Reagan left their parties at the end of two terms. It swings back because it always swings back.

The biggest problem the Republicans have is demographics. Blacks won't vote for them, hispanics won't vote for them, Asians won't vote for them. So you can do well with angry white males in the midterms, but in presidential elections, you are kind of screwed.
