Yes, you have to respect his ability to twist reality, while simultaneously ignoring:
1) the actual documents of secession from the various states that were focused solely on slavery.
2) the utter fact that they attacked an United States Army Base. Mexico, the CSA, Japan, and arguably Spain did that. They were destroyed thereafter. This is not even a question.

The pardon by Johnson was universal, included Davis, and he could to do nothing about it.

The amnesty was for all Confederates. That doesn't mean Jeff Davis accepted a pardon. When he was offered a pardon, he refused. They hoped he would take a pardon, thereby an admission of guilt. He never accepted an offered pardon. Contrary to what you said in post #(86), 'pardoned and accepted'.

In post #(121) you said Davis's trial would be a court martial. Which was not true. The fact that it would not be a court martial is what caused the delays. The rule of law was harder to prove than just a planned hanging event.

In post #(132), you said Davis trial was to be a military tribunal. And you said there was nothing said about any federal court of law. Which I proved again you are in error. Plenty was said concerning Federal Court of Law. See again post #(147).

In post #(134) you again say Davis would be tried by a military tribunal. Which is false. The civil court was the issue. Davis could not be tried by a military tribunal and because all would know the verdict was prearranged.

In post (164) you say, Johnson would have ignored Speeds recommendation. Not so, he couldn't have. By that time the public had become aware of all that was going on. The press was all over it and was attacking the idea of military tribunal. Even many in the North. They wanted justice not a hanging. They wanted vindication proved legally for that War.

It was Salmon Chase, one of the judges to preside over the case, that created the dog and pony show that would free Davis. And the reason he had to create an amnesty for Johnson to offer, was because neither he or anyone else wanted to go to trial knowing they could not get a guilty verdict.

The 'no' trial of Jeff Davis was/is proof that the South was not traitor. The North was. You don't have to like it. But, you can't change the history.

Actually the north had slavery too and the Emancipation Proclaimation ONLY ended slavery in the south. It was allowed to continue in the North.

The issue of slavery did not even come up until they were two years into the war. Lincoln said that if the south did not abandon the secession, he would end slavery. And, THAT is why slavery even came up.
