It doesn't matter why he was against Civil Rights; he was against them. More Democrats voted for the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Act than Repubicans. So you can just stop the disingenuous tale about the 3/4ths of those who voted against the bill.
Now you can tell me how the bill would not have passed if not for Republicans, or you can face the truth and understand that if Repubicans had been the only votes, the Civil Rights Act would not have passed. It's time Republicans stopped believing you can lie to us about your record.
We were faithful Repubicans for 100 years, and what did we get? You want to run your mouth about Republicans freeing the slaves, and that's all they did. They didn't stop Jim Crow. They practiced segregation just like everybody else. They excluded blacks from programs just like the Democrats. So after 100 years and a presidential nominee who opposed the Civil Rights Act, we told Repubicans to **** off. And we have done far better as Democrats even in the face of a consistent white backlash.
In 2013, it was a 5-4 decision with five conservatives who voted to gut provisions of the Voting Rights Act that has enabled modern voter suppression.
On December 6, 2019, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 4, the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019, by a vote of 228-186. This bill was proposed to undo the damage caused by the Roberts Supreme Court's 2013 decision. There were 187 Republicans in the House of Representatives in 2019. One Republican voted for this bill, Brian Fitzpatrick from Pennsylvania.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Act was opposed by every Republican in the Senate. Senate Republicans wouldn’t even let the bill come to the floor for debate. They filibustered the John Lewis Voting Rights Act like Dixiecrats did the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
It's time you Republicans stopped trying to lie to us as black people, hoping to fool us into joining your party and helping you take us back to Jim Crow.
