I believe the economic class the left hates the most is actually the upwardly mobile middle class, or as Marx put it, the "petty bourgeoise". Marx resented the very existence of the middle class for contradicting his ideas. Likewise, the left hates that we even have a middle class and want to tax its members down into equality. You see, the upwardly mobile middle class, not being in need of government programs, can not be pandered to as easily.
This is especially bad for the left if large numbers of people can accomplish upwards mobility without going to college and without the need for tuition assistance. This leads to a large section of society with too much independence and personal freedom for their liking, rather a population in need of government re-education and control. At the same time, those individuals are not wealthy enough to be part of the elite donor class funding their campaigns.
