Ma is allowed to earn only so long as he serves the party first. When the party decided that it would be better served by breaking up Ma's operations, that's what they did. 1. We do not yet know the facts. Mr. Ma may show up. And maybe even arm in arm with Emperor Xi.

2. Just as Americans often find it impossible to believe how heavy-handed our government can be to opponents, so do the Chinese, some of whom may become arrogant enough to think that they can get away with angering the wrong people.

3. China is a brutal dictatorship. It expects everyone to bow to its dictates. Anyone who does not will be crushed, as were the naive students at Tiananmen Square or the naive Hong Kongers who thought that China would respect their freedom.

Some Americans are worried that the Dems (especially if they take the Senate, which is likely) will also come down hard on its opponents, especially if "moderate" President Biden is gently sidelined by the radicals in the new government. "Liberals" are anything but liberal.
