Shireen Abu Akleh, 51, was a Christian Palestinian-American journalist who worked as a reporter for the Arabic-language channel Al Jazeera for 25 years, and was one of the most prominent names across the Middle East for her decades of reporting in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories.

She born in Jerusalem to a Palestinian Arab Christian family from Bethlehem. She earlier lived in the United States, obtaining U.S. citizenship through members of her mother's family in New Jersey.

Abu Akleh had expressed concern that she was being targeted by the Israel Defense Forces and armed Israeli settlers. Over 40 lesser known Palestinian journalists have been killed since 2000, mostly in Gaza and the West Bank. The Israeli authorities, the Zionist lobby, and the mainstream media have prevented most of these reports from getting a wide hearing in the United States.

The Israeli government originally argued that Abu Akleh — wearing a helmet and bullet-proof vest and clearly marked as “PRESS” — was shot accidentally by Palestinian militants. This argument is now widely discredited even by Western and Israeli media. She was deliberately shot in the face, along with another wounded Al Jazeera reporter — most likely by Israeli army snipers.

Even Israel’s Haaretz newspaper found the possibility of Palestinian responsibility unlikely as several buildings blocked a direct line of sight between reported armed militants hundreds of yards away from the reporter. Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem documented the exact location from which Palestinian militants depicted in a video had fired and the exact location in which Abu Akleh had been killed, observing that the two locations were hundreds of meters apart and separated by multiple walls and buildings. The Washington Post verified the distance and obstructions between the two locations.
