If people want to go to Mars, that is their own business. The Imam should be more concerned with trying to persuade the suicide bombers to stop blowing themselves up. After all, it is one thing to blow oneselves up if they want to do it in the middle of a desert with no one else around, but to take innocent people with you is certainly more of a sin than people willingly going on a trip to Mars. No doubt the Imam had a problem with people going to the moon.
Suicide is forbidden in Islam, including suicide by bombing or doing something stupid.
Plenty of fatwas on this issue.

Of course, the right wing deliberately miss out little details like this because they want to make out Islam encourages suicide.
The truth is, Islam expressly forbids suicide but some more extreme groups lie to their followers.
All suicide bombers go to hell - I just wish they'd do so without hurting anyone on their way.
Why, Freddie, some of the Muslims who think of themselves as very devout think it is a honor of being suicide bombers. Meanwhile, speaking of science and outer space, can you tell us of any completed missions to Mars which any Muslim country has made. Lately China India have accomplished missions to Mars, so we are eagerly awaiting to hear when some oil-rich Muslim country will spend some bucks on trying to emulate China and India.
