Is Zero Tariffs between U.S. and Trading Partners the Ideal we should Strive for?

The EU has said it offered the US a “zero-for-zero” tariff deal on cars and industrial goods weeks before Donald Trump launched his trade war, but that it would “not wait endlessly” to defend itself.

Maros Šefčovič, the EU commissioner for trade, said he had proposed zero tariffs on cars and a range of industrial goods, such as pharmaceutical products, rubber and machinery, during his first meeting with the US commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, on 19 February.

WASHINGTON – Elon Musk called for a "zero tariff situation" between the U.S. and Europe on Saturday amid stock market trepidation about President Donald Trump's massive new tariff regime.

Musk made the comments, which run counter to the sweeping tariffs Trump promised last week to impose on all U.S. trading partners, including European nations, to a group of Italian conservative politicians on Saturday.

"At the end of the day, I hope it's agreed that both Europe and the United States should move ideally, in my view, to a zero tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America," the tech billionaire told Matteo Salvini, the leader of Italy's right-wing League Party.

“When they come to us and say, ‘We’ll go to zero tariffs,’ that means nothing to us because it’s the nontariff cheating that matters,” Navarro said, by which he meant the routing of Chinese products through Vietnam, intellectual property theft, and a value-added tax. Later, though, Navarro conceded that zero tariffs would be a “small first start.”

To me it seems intuitively the best situation. But as you can see above, there are some roadblocks and conditions, so it may never come about.

But I'd say, the fewer tariffs the better, which would benefit the best producers as well as the consumers.

But I'm no expert. What say you?

most yes as it give the consumer more choice but the are always going to be one product you make you want to protect

most of these items are not a consumer item, they are raw goods, minerals and timber, even oil could fall into this category

Its an ideal to eork towards

i think the issue is not that simple

The EU or instance has trade barriers against the US beyond just tariffs

In principle I’m for free trade between nations with similar economies such as the US shares with the EU, Japan, ect

But the devil is in the details

I don't know what other trade barriers you mean, but I don't doubt there are some.

But to me it doesn't make sense to want Europe to keep its tarrifs on American goods, because they also have other trade barriers.

Get rid of the tarrifs and then find leverage to get rid of the other barriers. Or maybe we won't have any leverage, and the trade barriers will stay. Unfortunate for both sides, but we can't have everything our own way at all times.

I’m saying that all barrier to trade must be considered not just tariffs
