Only if he or she chose the wrong mate. But yes, it would be hard. Not impossible though. There are laws in place to help mitigate that.
Said laws dont always help. A person can get fleeced if not careful.
 
That all depends on one's priorities and needs. Do you have to have two cars? Do you have to have day care? Do you have to have cell phones? Do you have to have cable TV? Do you have to eat out? Do you have to go on vacations?

back then we lived good, but humbly. we still do, that is why we are now debt free. our 1st house was $50,000 w/ a HUD loan in 1985.

i don't see the comparison between 1985 & 2026 at all equal. it's still doable but a hell of lot more difficult & much rarer.

I think it's common for people to look back at other times and say they were different. It's never been easy though. At least for the majority of people. Is it worse today? Maybe. But I think people have always struggled with money.
