Is Karoline going to have to walk back this defiance of a court order?

This is absolutely unacceptable. There is three billion dollars sitting there, a contingency fund, approved by Congress. Trump's argument is that three billion is not enough, so the beneficiaries get NOTHING. It is "too hard", to push insufficient funds through the payment process. What a crock of shit. How come it is not too hard to push Congressional salaries through the payment process. Congress people, that can't do their job, get paid. Air Traffic Controllers, members of the military, homeland security, they do their job and they DON"T get paid. How does this make sense?
What are the specifics for release of that $3 billion, court order aside?

Appeal is not Defiance.
It is when you refuse to comply with a court order while it's being appealed.

Appeals Court Blocks Trump’s Attempt to Halt Full Food Stamp Funding

A federal appeals court late Sunday denied another attempt by the Trump administration to withhold full federal funding for food stamps, the latest twist in a seemingly endless legal saga over the fate of the nation’s largest anti-hunger program.

The decision came as Congress inched closer to reopening the government, offering a glimmer of hope for millions of low-income Americans who have seen their aid cut or delayed under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP.

The ruling, handed down by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, preserved another judge’s recent order that had required the Trump administration to provide full aid for the roughly 42 million people who depend on federal benefits to purchase groceries.

Ultimately, the court’s decision may not take effect until late Tuesday, under the instructions previously issued by the Supreme Court. The Trump administration last week had requested the justices’ intervention, seeking to halt to any requirement that it fully fund SNAP, which the court later granted on a temporary basis.

Not if you (1) are unable [don't have the funds] to comply or (2) have a temporary "stay" from further up the food chain.

It seems likely that the USDA will (under orders from higher-up) drag its feet anticipating a re-opening of Government.

Moving fast enough to avoid court sanctions but slow enough to impede the actual release-of-funds for some days.

Courts have the power to issue orders but they lack competency and jurisdiction governing the mechanics of the thing.

Enjoy the foot-dragging in anticipation of a Government re-opening...

The Administration's "skull-cracking club" ( actual release of funds ) remains intact for the moment...

Moot.

After last nights senate vote, it is moot anyway.
Really?

The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended by nearly a week a pause in a judge’s order that the Trump administration pay full SNAP benefits for November.

In an order, the Supreme Court said that the administration’s application for a longer-term stay of the order pending an appeal has been referred to the full court for consideration.

The court said that the short-term stay issued on Friday by Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson on the order is extended until 11:59 p.m. ET next Monday.

By Thurs. the gov't will most likely be fully open after Wed. house vote making your argument MOOT as I posted before. IOW, more wasted taxpayer money that the democrats are responsible for. It would be interesting to know how many trillions of $$$ the democrats have wasted on FRIVOLOUS lawfare actions over the past 8+ years. From your article.
