Is it "Congress's" Constitutional Duty To Raise The Debt Ceiling?

Think about it. Karine Jean-Pierre says:

“You’ve heard from the president multiple times during the last five months. He’s been very clear,” she said. “You’ve heard from the president; you’ve heard from the economic team; you’ve heard from Democrats, the leadership in the House, in the Senate talk — speak to this about the urgency, about Congress actually needing to act and doing their constitutional duty.”

So, if it was set up that it is up to Congress to raise the debt ceiling then that pretty much means that it isn't an automatic thing if they have to decide to do it. So, it is not Congress's Constitutional duty to just raise the debt ceiling automatically because it was set up that they debate it.

Further, I find it fairly amusing that some Democrats want to use the 14th amendment from 1868 to override a law from 1917.

Not to mention, Republicans in the House have already passed a debt ceiling increase. We're waiting on the Senate and Biden to pass it into law.

Republicans didn't pass a clean bill... So they didn't pass a raise of the debt ceiling...

Are you saying that Democrats can attach anything they want to to the debt ceiling increase the next time?

Is that fair game now...

For the debt ceiling increase the Democrats can make abortion legal until 24 weeks, secure education funding and get universal healthcare insurance when they have congress?

It is possible that it is allowed under the constitution. The language is vague. Which is enough. I'll demonstrate.

Do you think the GOP is entitled to risk plunging the world into financial chaos because they want to reverse some of Biden's policies?
The GOP is willing to raise the debt

Biden is unwilling to reduce spending

The National Debt, continued spending, and a refusal to seriously address have repeatedly forced Congress into a corner where the HAVE TO raise the Debt Ceiling to keep the country going.

Both politicians and citizens have become pretty conditoned to believe there would be no serious consequences if we default.

Allowing our debt to get this high - approx $32 TRILLION - is not only criminal fiscal incompetence - its insane.

The idea that - being $32 trillion in debt - that we can spend more every year than we collect in tax revenue and still pay down our debt and interest is a disregard for reality IOT fund agendas.

Politicians don't seem to understand the United States is BEYOND 'BROKE'. We would have to pay off approx $32 trillion JUST TO BE 'BROKE'.

The Biden administration wants to help fund a railway from Saudi to India. Well, isn't that nice. Let's see what we have in our 'wallet'...Oh, its a gaping hole, some dust, and an IOU for $32 TRILLION dollars.

Time to pass the pot with the guy ringing the bell becaus you have no cash to drop in the pot.

Politicians have lost touch with reality about how average Americans live, how theu pay their bills, balance their budgets, and pay off their debts. The average American doesn't have the power to tell credit card companies to raise his credit limit over and over each time he reaches the limit.

Fiscal responsibility is needed - and our $32 trillion debt abd latest debt ceiling increase battle prove we aen't going to get if from DC.
No problem when Trump was spending like a drunken sailor...

Biden has cut Government borrowing each year in office...

This is utter bullshit... You are total hypocrite, no problem if the Orange lad ass does it but is going mental now...

Democratic President reduce the deficit and GOP President increase for the last 40 years..

It is Congress's responsibility to be fiscal responsible.

Spending more money that it takes in is fiscally irresponsible.

The only responsible thing to do is for the Federal government to stop spending so damn much money.

Plenty of things we don't need to be spending money on but lets start by not giving any money to the goddamn Illegals and stop spending money building these stupid EV charging station. That would net billions.
How utterly fucking stupid...

Where were you when Trump Tax Cuts were coming in?

That is your deficit increase right there.... Unpaid Tax Cuts....

The left claim the debt never has to be paid down, only that it is our obligation to pay the interest on the principal.

It is their duty to pay for what they have already spent.

If you ran up huge credit card debt it would be your duty to pay what was due.
The very fact that there is a law where it is up to Congress to raise the amount of the debt ceiling is proof that it was meant to be debated and not just rubber stamped. That's why the law was passed. If they just wanted our debt ceiling to be rubber stamped, they wouldn't have made it a law that Congress was to debate it.

Prior to 1917, the United States did not have a debt ceiling, with Congress either authorizing specific loans or allowing the Treasury to issue certain debt instruments and individual debt issues for specific purposes. Sometimes Congress gave the Treasury discretion over what type of debt instrument would be issued.[2]

Between 1788 and 1917, Congress would authorize each bond issue by the United States Treasury by passing a legislative act that approved the issue and the amount.

In 1917, during World War I, Congress created the debt ceiling with the Second Liberty Bond Act of 1917, which allowed the Treasury to issue bonds and take on other debt without specific Congressional approval, as long as the total debt fell under the statutory debt ceiling. The 1917 legislation set limits on the aggregate amount of debt that could be accumulated through individual categories of debt (such as bonds and bills).

The debt ceiling was instituted as an EASIER way to increase debt

It's called debt. This nation has had debt for it's entire existence

If you think that fine. There is an appropriate time to deal with that responsibly. During the budget process

Do you hear yourself?

"Saving billions"? Do you think that would effect a 30 trillion dollar debt? This kinda shit will COST billions
There is no damn reason why this country has to go in debt. The goddamn US Federal government spends more money than the GDP of all but two other countries on earth.

The only fiscally responsible thing to do is spend less money and to tax less.

The left claim the debt never has to be paid down, only that it is our obligation to pay the interest on the principal.
And they would be right. We roll over the debt and the interest on it every year.

Almost always have.

Over time inflation makes it a non issue.

For instance we still carry the debt from WWII and it's insignificant

It was instituted to do the exact opposite

So because it's the job of Congress to do it...they don't have to do it?

Wing nut logic

Further, I find it fairly amusing that some Democrats want to use the 14th amendment from 1868 to override a law from 1917.

That means it's CONSTITUTIONAL you ignorant fool
Ummmmmmmmmmmm, the House has already passed a bill to raise the debt ceiling. They are the only ones who have. Schumer's senate has been absent and so has Biden.

14th Amendment

Section 4

The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.

SHALL NOT BE QUESTIONED

That's in the Constitution

You mean, yes, the law was created so Congress could debate about the debt ceiling instead of just rubber stamping blank checks? I agree.
Well, I mean "yes", they spent the money so they have the responsibility to pay the bills they ran up. Since the GOP will never agree to a tax increase, the only option is to borrow money.

And they would be right. We roll over the debt and the interest on it every year.

Almost always have.

Over time inflation makes it a non issue.

For instance we still carry the debt from WWII and it's insignificant
Yes, it is insignificant because the debt from WWII was not 32 trillion dollars. 32 trillion dollars is significant and it is causing hyper inflation.

How utterly fucking stupid...

You are confused Moon Bat. We don't have a problem because we don't tax enough. We have a problem because we spend too much money.

The US Federal government spends and borrows more money than the GDP of all but two other countries on earth. Then, on top of that, the State and Locals spend a like amount.

The fucking cost of government in this country is almost 40% of GDP and that is way too much.

The only fiscally responsible thing to do is spend less money. It is stupid and fiscally irresponsible to borrow money and increase taxes.

If you are confused about how much money this fucking government spends on stupid and unnecessary things I will be glad to list some of them for you. Like giving money to the Illegals and spending billion on stupid EV charging stations. Want more examples since you seem ignorant on the subject?
