I was in Iran in 1973 while the Shah was in power and agree that life was better for many from a Western point of view but it doesn't excuse brutality that you would probably find unacceptable at home.

My point was that Iran already had a democracy that was not a Colonial / US puppet government and Britain and the US destroyed for cheaper oil and strategic positioning.

The "democratic" government was installed by the Soviets and in one of its first actions "nationalized" (read STOLE) the oil industry that British and American companies spent hundreds of millions of dollars and pounds developing.

true---and the brutality increased after 1978----I came into close contact with
Iranian expats in the USA circa ~ 1966. There were a few ENTHUSIASTS for
the Ayatoilet KHOMEINI in the mid 1970s -----not many but a few-----it didn't last--
the bad news started coming from within Iran within one year

The USSR imploded peacefully. Then the US expanded NATO to Russia’s border. Good job.

The USSR imploded because Reagan bankrupted them by forcing them to abandon their decades-long strategy of matching superior western technology with massive numbers. With things like the Abrams, Bradley, F-16, F-14 and F-15 which could kill massive numbers of inferior Soviet vehicles and aircraft with impunity, the Soviets had to try to develop equipment of similar quality and even higher cost since their technology was far inferior to the state-run Soviet factories.

The US didn't expand NATO, the former slave states of the Soviets that were set free by the collapse begged to join NATO for protection from the return of the Russians. Modern history has shown that to have been a wise tactic.
