We could probably say today with some confidence that Russia would have made the same choice in Ukraine if not for fear of nuclear retaliation.

Of course not. Iran has survived in pretty complicated circumstances, and they are smart enough to work with Sunni Hezbollah, Orthodox Christian Russian, Marxist China, Atheist North Korea. Yes, if your education is good enough they can appoint you as, say, a platoon commander, and in some months you'll be a lieutenant. A bit different from American system, in which you became a lieutenant since you appointed on a position.
