Very true, but I have particular insight, with proximity and experience in that city.
In my military days, while on a cross-country road march, bivouacking overnight in Memphis, one of my Sergeants, (a double Bronze Star Combat veteran) was brutally gang attacked, robbed, beaten with clubs, stabbed, stomped while down causing multiple broken ribs, then sprayed with lighter fluid, set on fire and left for dead. When a civilian brought him to the bivouac area, and he was brought to me, as Officer of the Day, I did not recognize him. Then I had to fight with the VA hospital for emergency medical treatment, though they were listed as Medical Support on our Movement Order. They had gang problems in that city, even 40+ years ago.

Maybe I am a charitable optimist. It is true, I do not personally know many people that post. I lived in KC. I ran at night by myself. Never had a problem. But like I said, I stayed away from crack houses and other dangerous places.

There are places I went in Jackson, with impunity, many years ago (mid 70s), when I was the only white guy on an all black spotwelding crew at a local factory. Though, I knew at the time, some that I ran with were such badasses, even true racist assholes in the hood, thought twice about, before fcking with.

People are expressing their real feelings. Therefore in their personal lives, they do things that go along with them. For example, they won't talk this racist mumb jumbo on the job, they just won't hire and promote black people. The excuse for this will be that the blacks who applied are not qualified, or they will just not call blacks back for interviews based on the name on a resume. This is how modern racism is done, these tactics do not appear racist on the surface which allows for plausible deniability.
