Britain claims sovereignity and leases it to the US.

The UN has now served an eviction notice to the British. Though the ruling is not enforceable, it exerts moral pressure and has placed the future of the base in doubt.

It's a typical rock assignment. The military once had many more of them than I think they do now.
Last I heard we had a GPS insertion station there. This is one of the fixed ground stations that corrects GPS satellite clocks, position and orbital data. It may require a security clerance just to on the place.
I've been to a few of these rocks that are no more.
