Oh bullshit. The Drugs were here during Republican times, including Trump, and they’ll be here tomorrow.

And he’s right. How did we end the violence during the Prohibition era? We legalized the Alcohol again. We legalized booze. Then all of a sudden, there was no profit in smuggling, no territories to defend, or take. There was nothing for the Bootleggers to do. They couldn’t ship the booze cheaper than the lawful companies. So the Mob’s became irrelevant.
So from this historical example, we can see that just getting tough on the people smuggling doesn’t work. We know from fifty years of experience that spending billions to try and stop it doesn’t do diddly squat. Best will in the world, and all the luck to the Cops, they can’t stop more than what? Five percent of the drugs? Perhaps? If they are lucky?
So what happens? They hold a press conference, and while they are crowing about the major bust, ten times the amount on the table before them is passing through town.
Built the wall, the Cartels have and use planes. Have cops searching every car and truck along the border, the Cartels will just drive the shit through the desert in souped up Four Wheel Drives.
They use boats, ships, planes, and mules. Like the smart investor, they diversify so any hit in one sector, doesn’t do diddly squat to the overall picture.
You capture a boat full of drugs. Ten boats pass by all loaded down too. You can’t stop and search everything. And it is coming in through legal containers at the Ports. It’s coming in by planes, some flying low and some flying normal routes, smuggling it in with luggage or cargo. Tonight, ten thousand flights will come north. How many will have drugs? Two? Ten?
You wait for them at the airport, and they drop the drugs on parachutes into lakes and such. Boats come and scoop it up and off they go to sell.
You could mobilize the entire US Military, and still stop less than half the drugs. And while they are doing that nothing else could be done.
Drugs are sold on most street corners in the poorest neighborhoods. They’re sold in houses in the rich neighborhoods too. They’re sold everywhere.
We spend billions on interdiction, and we haven’t made a dent. We jail people for sentences that are insanely long, for smuggling, or dealing, and it doesn’t slow anything. We seize bank accounts, and cash, and still they deal, and still the Cartels get more powerful.
We’ve tried it that way since I was born. And it is no closer today than it ever was.
Legalize it. Suddenly the product is out from behind the buildings to on the shelves. Suddenly we find that the prices drop, and the quality increases, because now there is market share to be gotten. Criminal empires lose their cash cows, and the Cartel Bosses can’t afford hundreds of soldiers to fight for them. No money coming in.
Getting tough on the Mobs didn’t end the violence of the Prohibition era. It was ended when the product they had been bringing to a demanding public, was no longer contraband.
