218 is the number to win Speaker WITH A FULL HOUSE IN ATTENDANCE TO VOTE...

'To be elected speaker a candidate must receive an absolute majority of the votes cast, as opposed to an absolute majority of the full membership of the House – presently 218 votes, in a House of 435.'

If, for example, only 200 House members voted, all that would be needed would be a majority of 200.

If Democrats are as smart as they sometimes can be when it comes to getting their way politically, they could put their much desired McCarthy in the speaker role easily.

All they have to do is not talk to McCarthy first, but publically announce that they intend to vote for him if the vote comes to the floor. They can't claim a deal, but they can say that they are doing it for the good of the country.
