If you could live/work in another country for a period of years of even immigrate to that country, what countries would they be?

As a US citizen I often get bored and have dreams of working and living in another country either temporary on a visa, as a dual citizen, or immigrating to that country.

Countries I have thought about:

1. Canada - Truck driving jobs
2. Thailand - Teach English
3. China - Teach English
4.Vietnam - Teach English
5. Portugal
6. Germany
7. United Kingdom
8. Vietnam
9. Russia - Before the Russia/ Ukraine war started back in 2021 I had thought about the idea or working/living in Russia. Just for the experience temporarily. I thought about truck driving in Russia
10. Saudia Arabia - temporarily working on visa

Australia

Gold nugget hunting with my metal detectors.
Never having been there, its hard to say. I've known many Aussies and have never met one that I didn't get along very well with, but I don't know about gov't and politics---they always have a way of throwing a wrench into things no matter where you go.

Old indians supposedly went off into the woods and never returned, when they knew they didn't have many days left. . . That and the Australian outback just seem to go well together for me.

I've lived in five foreign countries on three continents.

Europe seems to be the best, though it would involve having money though.

Lower cost of living is an attractive reason to move. Many countries also have a much lower cost of living compared to USA. Rent and housing is often lower, although I hear that is not the case for Canada. Also some countries have free healthcare or healtchare much less expensive than it is in the US.

I have heard it is much cheaper to live in

China
Russia
Thailand
Germany
Portugal
Mexico
Vietnam
Poland
Czech Republic
Hungary
Saudia Arabia

Healthcare is free or lower cost in

Canada
Russia
Germany
United Kingdom
Mexico
Poland
China
Thailand
Vietnam
Hungary
Czech Republic
Saudia Arabia

Then there is the aspect of employment security, PTO days off, holidays

I hear many European countries and Canada have much better employment security than the USA does, more PTO days off, more holidays off, etc.

And finally there is the aspect of how the country feels to take care of its citizens

USA: Driven by capitalism
Canada and European Countries have a more social welfare system.

Canada is often associated with Collectivism, focusing on community and collective harmony while the US is more individualistic.

It is these ideals I see a more strength of Canada and European countries and thus more of a lure to immigrate there. The USA ideals of capitalism and individualism I see as a weakness that tends to do more harm then good to it's citizens. USA seems to promote individualism and the self vs other countries for example promoted more ideals of national unity, the greater good, and tradition to strengthen the nation.

Ireland, I have irish roots, tour the castles, drink good beer
Poland would be really nice but that language is tough
most younger gen speak English but not the older gen
I am good in Ireland, also have England roots but that place
is gone, can't say anything, gangs, taxes off the chart

Yeah I thought about going to Germany because I have roots there. My great grandparents were German-Jews who fled from Germany to avoid persecution for being Jewish.

I spent a fortnight in Ireland last year touring. Very nice country, but a very sad history and the English won't get off of the island. If I chose it, I would be very rural, possibly in the southwest portion of the island. Small towns.
Scotland would be cool, Edinburgh is a classic city

Russia used to seem like a good place to go, but that was before everything went to hell. It’s one of the wealthiest countries in the world in terms of potential—minerals and other resources—and they need a lot of things.

But the government doesn’t respect personal freedoms or property rights, which makes it too risky. Same goes for much of Africa: too much risk, not enough protection.

I don’t know where in the world we’d actually be welcomed. Maybe Argentina? I definitely wouldn’t want to go anywhere in Europe.

We were a united country at one time, but that was before Vietnam.

I've admired what little I know of Norway. It's getting less attractive as the weapons testing zone gets warmer. Canada too, Switzerland perhaps, the Swiss and Canadians I've known seem all right.

But I'd never deal with the winters no matter how admirable their societies.

I'd need a modern social democrat country with a temperate maritime climate. Some parts of coastal Portugal perhaps.

Thailand got fed up of foreigners and said that if you leave the place you stay in over night, when you come back you have to register with the police again. And that registering takes like half a day.

I agree. If you’re going to move to another country, may as well pick one with nice weather.
