You know, I can't stand Newt Gingrich but he made an excellent point on one of the talking head shows this past Sunday.

He said they didn't bother competing in California because it always votes majority Democrat. He then pointed out that if the race was about the popular vote instead of the electoral vote, they would have put some energy into California and probably would have increased Trump's votes by a few million, even if the majority of Californians still voted for Clinton.

Trump ran his campaign as an electoral vote campaign, not a popular vote campaign.
