There is a semi-famous photo of a Jewish store owner standing on the steps of his store as a nazi soldier is standing at the side of his storefront, another German soldier is on his other side if I recall correctly, it's been many years now since I've seen it.

I've never read the context of the photo and I might search it out someday, but he seems to have a little smile on his face. Quite calm and nonchalant, probably viewing these guys in their halloween costumes as silly soldiers following dumb orders which even they didn't believe as they carried them out (though of course, many did especially over time thanks to Goebbels efforts).

You can tell he views this as some sort of dumb reinforcement of a stupid law, one he probably viewed as that which would pass, a small phase in German life. Almost certainly it was taken before the Night of the Broken Glass in which stores were smashed and set ablaze.

Perhaps I'm strange or have read too much history, but sometimes I will be walking along in the city and I will think to myself "imagine I was living in Germany or France during this period in time?".

80 Years isn't that far removed even though the world has changed so dramatically since. There are enough common identifiers to imagine similar infrastructure, government by decree, court decisions etc.
