If you send the right kind of criminal to military school or military service in lieu of prison you will not only avoid the high rate of recidivism of those who go to prison, but you will instill structure and discipline in a young persons life. It may help with recruiting too.
To me this is a no-brainer option. Instead of funding a massive prison industrial complex which doesn't do F all for a nations competitiveness. Have criminals go to the military and see what skills they might offer. You might find someone can learn a foreign language quickly or be a white hat hacker.
I know one of the appeals for me to pursue military service (which I didnt), was our Royal Military College which is cutting edge and would offer me free university. What isn't there to like about it?
I know some kids growing up who lost their lives in a stolen car, 3 of them with 1 survivor. I know others who did petty crime even though they were intelligence kids, their lives ruined before they even became men. What a damn waste for a nation desperate for talent.
I remember the old drug commercials U.S networks would push about kids and drugs, "a mind is a terrible thing to waste". Man Reagans team was absolutely correct and his impulses on that issue were right. Unfortunately, they pursued a "touch on crime agenda", just as Clinton did and all it did was leave more kids fatherless and generations stuck in a cycle.
Trump has reinvented the GOP due to outreach to a broad community. He can't just desire the spotlight meeting wealthy clowns in Europe or big meetings with leaders. That is of course important, but he has to reinvent the American Dream.
This isn't an option for everyone obviously. Where it can be embraced and leveraged it should be.
