After 70 years the Marine Corps admits that one of the Flag raisers in the iconic Joe Rosenthal photo of the Flag raising on Iwo Jima was misidentified as Corpsman John Bradley. It took painstaking research from a couple of amateur historians to correctly identify the Marine in Bradley's spot as PFC Harold Schultz of Detroit. To his credit John Bradley never sought the spotlight after the historic bond tour of the Flag Raisers during the War. As a matter of fact according to the book "Flags of our Fathers written by his son James Bradley he avoided publicity at all costs and never talked about it. I believe Doc. Bradley was on the hill at the time and he was an honorable man who was stuck in a tough situation. The powers that were in charge of the Military at the time didn't give a damn about the mental stability of the Marines they literally plucked off the battle field, it was all about raising money and after all the Flag raising was no big deal. It was just a work party an half of them were dead in a week. Maybe the War Department didn't want a Marine named Schultz to represent America while we were still fighting in Germany and maybe PFC Schultz didn't give a damn or maybe it was an honest mistake. While PFC Schultz is vindicated for some reason as a former Marine I feel bad about the whole thing.
