I thought Afghanistan was the "good war"???

In my opinion, we need to leave that sewer of a place. Let the natives care for themselves for a change. Afghanistan did not attack us. If they won't defend themselves, they deserve whatever comes crawling out of the sewer they are living in.

what if al qaeda returns?

That is their problem. It is time the U.S. government stop being the world babysitter. It is time we started putting America first. Screw the rest of the world, if they don't want us getting our own country in order.

I don't like the nanny state government actions the political whores try and legislate on us. I am not about to approve of them going abroad and doing that.
It was OUR problem not too long ago.

Well it wasn't only their problem when airplanes flew into the World Trade Center.

What we need in Afghanistan is not more troops from us. We need more troops from the rest of the world. The problem with Al Qaeda is not a U.S. but a world problem.

What the rest of the world is seemingly doing with Afghanistan is trying to appease a certain of group by not getting too involved due to the risks of attacks.

Churchill said it best, "An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."

I am looking forward to the protests when Obama doubles the troop levels in Afghanistan.

It will happen, mark my words. It definitely will happen. Doubling our troop levels is not the way to go about this. However, he now has a general who he said his advice he'd listen to directly. His general wants 500,000 troops over 5 years.

Last time I checked, we were not attacked by Afghanistan. We aren't and shouldn't be the world police. You cannot eliminate an ideology. And for the government to continue to suggest that if we get Afghanistan and Iraq in order, the Taliban will be defeated, is absurd. The government may fool others with that myopic thinking, but not me.

The primary duty of our government is to protect us from invasion. It is not to police the world trying to eliminate an ideology when other sovereign countries have a responsibility of defending themselves.

As a nation, we are broke. Our own house is a mess and our government wants to go clean up someone else's house with our money? I don't approve of that twisted logic.

I am aware the Taliban did not attack the US. They did, however, harbor al qaeda, did they not? Did they not refuse to hand bin Laden over to the US?

Yes and no.

Taliban - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 4 October 2001, it is believed that the Taliban covertly offered to turn bin Laden over to Pakistan for trial in an international tribunal that operated according to Islamic Sharia law, but Pakistan refused the offer.[123][124] On 7 October 2001, before the onset of military operations, the Taliban ambassador to Pakistan offered to "detain bin Laden and try him under Islamic law" if the United States made a formal request and presented the Taliban with evidence.[125] This counter offer was immediately rejected by the U.S. as insufficient.

If anything, we can blame Pakistan (where Osama currently is) for part of this problem too.

He should have been handed over to the US and tried in New York City, pennsylvania, and Virginia. **** this islamic law horseshit.

If they don't want to do some pest control of their own, then the radical rats will take them over.

No country has ever survived perpetual war.

In my opinion, the political whores in Washington are using our brave men and women in the armed forces as political pawns in their chess match to try and spread democracy and bring peace to the Middle East. And all of this is being done under the guise of protecting us.

I am all about protecting this Republic from invasion. On a government level, I don't care about the other countries. They should be on their own, as far as I am concerned. We have more than enough mess to clean up inside our house.

On a personal level, I wish them the very best against the radical nutjobs.

As a source for numbers of troops deployed, Wikipedia is not a great reference so I would take their numbers with a critical eye. Just a commentary on wiki in this instance.

about 40,000

Where are the other 450000 troops going to come from?

Your guess is as good as mine. I would say the only possibility is more troops from other countries and a Draft. Or maybe the 100,000+ troops we have in Military bases overseas too.

I agree. He should of been. It's also quite obvious where he is after 9/11. He is definitely in Pakistan.

about 40,000

I red somewhere that additional 40,000 troops would be 63% increase.

That would mean we got in Afghanistan some 64-65K troops.

Direct U.S. troops we have 48,000+ as I mentioned beforehand. I'm not sure if they count the U.S. troops there as a part of NATO. Do they?

As I said, using wiki as a source for numbers of deployed personnel must be regarded critically.

The best source is the DoD, and they typically do not release too many specifics on that information for security reasons.

Informed speculation is fine, but remember that is likely the best one can do.
